Short excursion into Athens ... 1 highlight, 4 hrs, what do you recommend?

We're stopping in Athens, but are looking to do 1 sight, but do it well, rather than cramming a lot of sights into a few hours.

What should we go see, and do you have recommendations for a good tour company?

If you've not been to the Acropolis before, that is the obvious choice. It's more than just the Parthenon and the views are fantastic. I would recommend getting there as early as possible in the morning before the crowds and the heat. You can then stroll down the hill (taking the path past the Theatre of Dionysus) to the New Acropolis Museum to complement your visit. It's not a large museum and it's nicely air-conditioned.

I can recommend George's Taxi, who also connected us with an excellent guide (who was an archaeologist) who took us around the Acropolis and the museum. I've also heard good things about PK Travel.

I recommend the museum as well. It was truly amazing, for me at least.

The museum makes more sense after you visit the Acropolis. Then you can put what you see in context. It is beautifully done and it completes your visit to the Acropolis.
