Weather on Trans-atlantic cruise September/October

Weather on crossings is very difficult to predict and the beginning of September could be very different to the end of October ? When are you sailing ?

Even in pleasant temperatures the wind across the open decks can be strong and cold.

Last year I did a back to back in October. The crossing from New York to Southampton was very pleasant. Warmish even.

On the return it was quite rough and windy yet with relatively clear skies and only one wet day.

I did two crossings this July. Very foggy for the first four days out New York and very damp. Calm seas thought. On the return it seemed to rain each day and windy. Cool temps each way. One slightly rough evening Very little sun. All in all the weather in October 2016 was better than July 2017.

Honestly the weather doesn't matter when on the QM2. It is a magnificent way to travel. This July was my 7th and 8th crossing and I found everything on board to be even better in the past. The crew were absolutely fantastic! Everyone crew member seemed to be really happy and the service was excellent.

One correction to the above: I should have typed "I found everything on board to be even better THAN in the past. Or to be more clear: everything was outstanding!

Predicting the Atlantic in that time is like predicting the Lottery results-YOU CAN’T- it’s the hurricane season, it’s late summer-simply, it can be everything-it can be one thing. Just enjoy the grandest ship in the world. :D

I was on the foggy crossing, too. People walking around in shorts were disappointed in the weather. The first day, I went out and took some photos. Very atmospheric with the fog so thick!

The roughest crossing we ever had was a WB in July on our first time on QE2. The good thing about WB crossings, as Captain Wells pointed out, is that the weather doesn't travel with you. So on that first crossing we had one very rough day and then several nice days.

As others have said, there's no predicting the weather on a crossing.

My only crossing thus far was an EB in early September. It seems we had a not-so-little black rain cloud escorting us all the way to Southampton. Didn't interfere with our enjoyment, but I did more treadmill and less promenade. This was my first "cruise" that wasn't planned to enjoy warm weather. Since we went in expecting to enjoy the ship rather than the sun, we enjoyed the crossing very much.

We were on the QM2 late October 2016. You will need a wind breaker and a sweater, or something similar. You might be pleasantly surprised, but expect lots of wind and cool temperatures.
