Thanks, Bob. Yeay! My first shore excursion for this cruise. Cyril is right. Solos can join independent tours. This will be my third visit to Vatican City and still a must-see for me. It is absolutely beautiful and amazing.

From what I understand, the group needs to decide on other places to see. There are so many possible other places to visit. I am sure we can work it all out.

Searching online I did find a site about Monte Cassino:

http://nuke.montecassinotour.com/

I don't know anything about their tours or anything about them but it may give you an idea on options. They show a tour from Rome but there's no way to be in Rome by 0800 when the ship arrives in port at 0700.

http://nuke.montecassinotour.com/DAY...7/Default.aspx

Hopefully you'll find a tour for your husband but based on my limited research I wouldn't be too optimistic about touring Monte Cassino during our day in port.
Thanks for the information and realistic concern. I was able to locate a tour guide for Monte Cassino who would meet us in Cassino around 10:30 am. We would have to take a train from Citavecchia to Rome and from Rome to Cassino. I will post and see if anyone is interested in this tour. My DH is interested I the contribution of the Poles.

I have just booked with RomeCabs for an all-day tour in Rome for Oct 14th. I have used this company before and they are very good and very reliable. We also want to book a guide for the Vatican Museum which would be divided up among the people on the tour. If anyone is interested in joining, please e-mail me at ssbeagle at yahoo dot com with your names and cabin numbers.

The standard tour we provide in Rome is designed to cover the city

major sites in one day. Additional off the beaten path tours can be

arranged upon request of the client.

Pick up at the pier at 08,00 AM to finish at 05:30 PM.

The driver will meet you right on the pier holding a sign with your last name.

We'll drive in a smooth motorway trough the country and see the Etruscan Landscapes.

It will take approx. one hour and ten minutes to get to Rome.

The drive will continue along Ostiense Road and arrive at the

Pyramid built for Caius Cestio .At this

stage of the tour we will be inside the ancient Roman Wall built by

Emperor Aureliano.

We will then arrive at the Circus Maximus, the large ancient stadium for

chariot races. Behind the stadium you

will see the Palatine Hill where the villas and the domus of the

emperors were built. At this point you will

be able to see the Arch of Constantine and the Coloseum. We will stop

here, and you will be able to visit the Colosseum on your own if you wish.

.In order to avoid lengthy, and time consuming
queues you can book VIP tickets here:

http://www.ticketclic.it/database/B2...DefID=170&LN=1

The Colosseum charges 13,50 Euros per ticket.

Following the Colosseum,we will take you to Capitoline hill where you can admire the Roman Forum and take some pictures

Later we will stop at the Piazza Venezia where you

will see the Vittorio Emanuele Monument, dedicated to the first king of

Italy.

Now will be the time to visit the Vatican Museum where you will be able

to admire the vast collection of masterpieces, including the Raphael

Rooms and the Sistine Chapel. Admission to the Museum is 15 Euros per person.

If you want VIP admission(no line if any) you have to book it directly at this link:

http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/...?weblang=en&do

Cost of this special booking is 19 Euros per person.

Please book admission tickets only at the 01:00PM or 02:00PM timeslot

If you wish to have a tour guide in the

Vatican Museum I can book one at a price of 120 Euros for two hours for a group of up to six people.

If there will be up to 8 people the Vatican guide will cost 150Euros for two hours.

It will take two hours to visit the Museum,The Sixtine Chapel and The Basilica.

Please note that the Vatican museum is closed on Sundays.

I strongly suggest you book a guide as the Vatican can be confusing.

Please pay the Vatican Guide with Euros funds directly at the end of the tour.

Our next destination will be the Pantheon, once the temple of all Roman

gods, then a church and burial place for kings and artists (Raphael).

Trevi fountain will follow. Here you can toss a coin in the fountain to

ensure a return visit to Italy.

Finally, you can rest and have a seat on the Spanish Steps.

Please note that the order in which we will visit the sites may vary

pending traffic conditions or other third party act. The tour can be

altered to personalize your desires. Additional costs for entry tickets

are not included in the tour fee.

The fees for the tours include tolls and parking, and are required in Euro funds.

Kindly dress appropriately in order to be able to enter a church.

Tour fee:

for up to three people will be 450 euros

for up to four people will be 500 Euros

for up to six people will be 550 Euros

for up to eight people will be 600 euros

(does not include entrance fees to Colosseum and Vatican Museum, Vatican guide and lunch)

My deluxe vans can accommodate up to 8 people.

Many tours are being planned for all of our ports. Included on the spreadsheet are pages for private tours that have planned, including participants and space available, and a page specifically to show openings. If you would like to have your tours listed, please send me the information at Sunviking2013 at gmail.com Today I have received 4 e-mails from members of the group asking about tour openings and I can’t answer their questions w/o having the info on the spreadsheet.

I am going to see if there is enough interest in doing "Rome in a Day" without seeing the Vatican and Sistine Chapel. We have seen the Vatican/Sistine Chapel and they are very time-consuming. I have
contacted Rome Cabs and this is our adjusted tour. (If you have any questions, use the email address on the spreadsheet or contact me at [email protected] I am having some computer problems the last few days so bear with me if I don't respond immediately.

ROME IN A DAY (without Vatican/Sistine Chapel tour)

This tour is for those who have been to the Vatican/Sistine Chapel before and are interested in seeing other sites in Rome.
This tour is done by Rome Cabs – a very reliable company! We have used them before and cannot speak highly enough of them. The professional English speaking driver will pick us up on the pier at 8:00 AM sharp and will return back to the port at around 5:00 PM.
This is taken from their website: www.stefanrometours.com
”From Civitavecchia you will start with an easy and comfortable drive to Rome that will take approximately one hour and 10 minutes. During this time, your private driver will point out various points of interest along the way and answer any questions that you may have about your day. We will drive along a scenic highway through the countryside of Rome and see the Etruscan landscape where the ancient Etruscan people lived in ancient times. Etruscan civilization is the modern English name given to the culture and way of life of a people of ancient Italy and Corsica whom the ancient Romans called Etrusci or Tusci.”

Our privatized tour is pretty much the same as his “Rome in a Day” tour but without the Vatican and Sistine Chapel since some have already seen these on previous visits to Rome and they take considerable time to visit.

Our tour would include the following:
St. Peter’s Square
Pyramid of Caius Cetio
Circus Maximus
Colosseum
Roman Forum
Vittoria Emanuele Monument
Pantheon
Trevi Fountain
World’s most unique McDonalds
Catle Sant’angelo
Piazza Navona
Cappuchin Crypt (if there is enough interest and if time allows)

Tour fee:
up to four people will be 500 Euros
up to six people will be 550 Euros
up to eight people will be 600 Euros

The costs above does not include the cost of tickets or lunch.

On his site:

“With all of our traveling, you are probably ready for a time of rest, relaxation and the wonderful food that Italy is known for. We can recommend a quick café for about 10 Euros per person…

“You will be able to visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum on your own if you wish. The 12 Euro tickets include a visit to the Palatine Hill, the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. You may purchase the tickets in advance online to save time.”

Quote from Stefano: “Colosseum and forum guide will be 120 euros for 2 hours at least.” Of course, we could just do the Colosseum on our own (as above) without a guide).

Other information received from Stefano via emails are the following:
All entrance fees can be bought at the moment of the tour.
The only tickets you can pre purchase online is the combo colosseum/palatine/forum at 13,50 euros per person (the colosseum charges 1,50 euros per person for the online fee)
Tour fees are for the driver who will give you a lot of info but not guide you in the sights.
If you wish to have an additional guide cost will be 60 euros per hour for the guide, but it is not strictly necessary since the driver will give you a lot of info beforehand.

Stefano has sent me an e-mail saying that the Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel would not be available for us that day as it will be closed. Unusual for a Monday but I guess they have something special going on that date in the future. So St. Peter's Basilica and the catacombs will be done instead if that's okay with everyone who signed up with me. Please let me know. And I still have openings for two people.

Hard to believe that he knows that the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel will be closed more that a year and a half in advance. (wonder if he means this Oct 14 which is a Sunday?)

October 14, 2013 is a Monday. I would think that the tour operators would know if it was closed for some reason on a Monday.

Every European land-based trip I have taken over the years has had some tourist location(s) closed or under extreme construction - one year it was the Doge's Palace in Venice, another year Notre Dame in Paris. That is to be expected when things get old. They need a little spa time to rejuventate.
