Any tips on how to get the best prices once they come out? I've never been to Europe and I don't fly alot so don't have points or a loyalty program I'm part of. Any particular airlines anyone really likes?

Hi Michele. I know that Air Transat has some very good prices for travel this year. They don't fly directly to Venice, but the prices make it worth organizing a connection. I'll be looking at them for next year for sure!

we will probably fly Air Transat to Paris, stay a few days then on to Venice.

that's what I call a win-win situation

For all us Americans we can't even begin to look at flights before 330 days. Hopefully oil will go down and prices will too!

I'm with you with no points, loyalty, etc on any airline. I'll be following this thread with a lot of interest once people start booking their air. I'll just keep hoping the air doesn't cost more than the cruise.

Air New Zealand has pretty decent one way fares from LAX to London. Around $550 including taxes for this year. Tons of cheap options to get from London to Venice.

Thank you. I would have never thought to check Air New Zealand. Pam had mentioned to me that flying from LA to London and then to Venice might be a good way of getting better rates. I will definitley look at that option!

Last year I found out round trip much cheaper than a one way.(half the cost)
So I booked another cruise going the other way and used both tickets.
Went home from cruise via Heathrow last May and returned end of August for another cruise home.
Also discovered something else. If I book through American Airlines, I can select a British Air flight that is two hundred dollars cheaper than booking direct through BA.BA has direct flights from San Diego to Heathrow, instead of me having to fly American and change planes in Dallas. I checked current prices a couple of months ago.
I already checked and right now I can fly BA to Heathrow and a change to go to Barcelona (we are on the previous cruise so Barcelona is our destination.Don't know what the prices will be, too early to book.
Last time we flew home from Venice , we flew Lufthansa(partnering with United airlines). Wonderful service on board.
When I book flights, I look for routing as well as price. Don't want to fly all over the place with lots of changes.

Just be sure to watch the baggage restrictions if you change airlines. Europe has different rules when flying in Europe than directly to or from the U.S. to Europe.

Different weights and baggage sizes.

We've done it a few times now. Airlines like BA are pretty comparable to US airlines. Not too many US have 2 bags for free anymore. If you're going Easy jet then you have to watch it as their limit is 44lbs

I flew Air Berlin last fall and have been watching the price fluctuations this fall for the the past four months. They did not change all that much until last week when I noted a dramatic increase in all their flights to Europe for this fall, some almost doubled. So...I am thinking, for next year...buy before July.

They only fly twice a week from Vancouver but I thought I'd check them out anyway. Definitely not cheap for this October. I'll check again in the Spring.

On our last one-way to Venice (in 2009), we got a great deal from cheapoair. Once we booked with them, we could go to the airline website (we wound up with Delta) and make our seat selections. Our next two transatlantics plus the one we have this fall were all on Celebrity and their Choice Air program has the best deals for one-way. We haven't bothered to look yet for 2013 so I have no idea how the Princess Air program works.

Hi Pam,

Thanks for the hint! I have added CheapOAir to the list of sites I check. I have been tracking prices from Ottawa to Barcelona (we are doing the preceeding leg) and noticed prices initially very good for one year off and then they increase and stick. A lot of airlines don't have advantegeous pricing if you are only going one way.

Has anyone ever used airticketsdirect?

Lots of complaints about Cheap o Air, do some research before venturing into that so you know what you're buying. Also keep an eye on Air Berlin, finances not good and getting worse.
