Problems with sea grass in Costa Maya.

Any recent experiences with the sargassum problem in the Western Caribbean? Thinking about booking Maya Chan again, but the reports from this summer are not too good. It has become a big issue in resorts from Cancun to Belize.

It is only a problem if the ocean is too polluted for sea grass to grow. Otherwise, its appearance is a normal part of being on the ocean's shore.

It has gotten much worse recently. The local tourist boards are all saying it is due to storms in the Caribbean. I think pollution has something to do with it as well.

Yes, storms may have pushed more ashore. However, it is still part of being on the shore of the water.

Might as well complain about the sea life in the water.

We've never gone to Maya Chan but it sounds like the kind of place that would do a decent job of removing sea grass. We did a beach day near the port last March and the sea grass was everywhere. Most places tried in vain to keep up with it, but there were mountains of it piled up. We had a fun day on the beach but there was honestly too much of it in the ocean and near shore to enjoy the water. Next time, we'll do the ruins again, try to get to Maya Chan, or stay on board.

We went to Almaplena in April because it had review of clear water and a reef off shore. There was brown water and sea grass everywhere. We were told to not swim to the reef and that visibility was poor. We did swim and it was pretty funky. Food and drinks were great but the beach wasn't that great.
