The problem with having a nonsmoking ship is that a number of officers and crew also smoke, especially officers. Since they are on the ship for months at a time, how would you handle that?

I have observed that most of the smokers onboard are ship crew and officers. Usually there are a few passengers smoking, but not that many. Wish Regent would take the chance on making one ship nonsmoking and see how it goes.

Yes some crew/officers do smoke but they can’t smoke in their cabins. Only in designated areas. The same with other luxury lines.

Years ago I read where Carnival tried a nonsmoking cruise and it did not sell well. Regent does not want to alienate all smokers. Just avoid them.

Do non smoking towns also ban vehicles with internal combustion engines especially diesels as these cause far more air pollution and health problems to passers by than smokers do?

The only non-smoking town I know of is in California - definitely unusual in the U.S. and Canada. Haven't heard of anyplace that bans vehicles with internal combustion engines (or diesel engines). They definitely cause more air pollution than smokers but we really are not exposed to it that much (if you keep the vent on your car closed).

I personally do not care if someone is smoking - as long as I'm not smelling it or breathing in their second-hand smoke.

MalbecWine - agree that Regent does not want to alienate their smoking customers and, In my opinion, have taken giant steps over the past decade to minimize areas where smoking is permitted on the ship.

Whether car/trucks or smoking causes more health problems can be up for debate. However, what is the utility or necessity of cigarette smoking? None. Only tobacco companies benefit from smokers. We need cars and trucks as a society to function. And maybe in the near future they will all run on electricity. Even some of the new cruise ships are switching to natural gas as fuel.

I believe Seabourn was the last line to prohibit smoking in suites and verandas. Smokers are dealing with it and more people are trying to quit.

As a former smoker I know how hard it is to quit just like alcoholics both can kill you.

Good health to everyone.

You are so right - been there - done that. Some say that giving up smoking can be worse than giving up drugs. The one prescription medication that helps give up smoking can also cause suicidal thoughts (according to friends that have used it). I try to be as sympathetic as possible to smokers since I know that they can't just put down a cigarette and quit forever without any problem. On the other hand, I just want to avoid being around it as much as possible.

CBWIR - not sure if your comment is taking into account the difficulty this is for people - both smokers and non-smokers. My friends that are on oxygen (for various reasons - not only smoking) really have to avoid second hand smoke and smokers need to be sensitive to this fact.

Thankfully this is not an combative thread but one with suggestions on how Regent can possibly make their ships a little better for non-smokers while giving smokers a place to smoke without affecting others. If this means being outside in inclement weather, so be it (no different than the laws in most of the states).

I see that Regent doesn't have a policy on Vaping. This I can find worse than cigarette smoke as lots of these E-Cigs produce plumes of vapour with obnoxious smells.

Coming from the UK where all inside smoking is banned, and in most cases E-Cigarettes, I do notice it when I travel to a country that allows it, especially in a restaurant/public enclosed area, like a bar.

Whilst I agree that it is up to an individual whether they smoke or not, and that they should have a place to smoke, please tell me that E-cigarettes are prohibited from use in Regents Suites.

I thought That vaping was banned on Regent. All inside areas on Navigator are smoke free, if you do not like the smoke the other side of the pool deck is smoke free, we just walk through on the other side and sit there. When the ship is in motion the smoke dissipates rapidly. The only other place is up on the top deck ,near the putting green, a little breezy!! Best other alternative would be to use the most underused area on the Navigator, the casino area for smoking,.

You'll be fine. The smoking policy says: “The use of electronic cigarettes is allowed within designated smoking areas only.”

This is so true. I tried it and the side effects are horrible. The patches really were better for me and a bit of determination. Chantix was not good.

Yep - Chantix was the medication that my daughter took. She ended up using the patch and hasn't smoked in a year. I, on the other hand went "cold turkey" many years ago and kept dreaming that I picked up a cigarette and took a drag for a very long time. So glad that all of that is behind me.

Obviously people have to really want to stop smoking and they will do it when they are ready - not when a cruise ship line makes it difficult to smoke - not when people give them dirty looks, etc. I wish that there were a magic pill that could help people and did not much severe side effects.

P.S. Do you live on the west coast? I only ask because there are not many of us still posting at almost 10:00 p.m.

TC, unfortunately nicotine is pretty much a drug as it is very addictive and the tobacco companies knew that smoking was addictive.

I remember being in Dublin on a Seabourn cruise shortly after they eliminated smoking in their pubs. Some thought they never could do it and that business would suffer but somehow it worked out well.

From a safety issue I was very happy when cruise lines started eliminating smoking from rooms and verandahs as I always was concerned with a fire at sea. Am happy that many places around the world have eliminated it from other areas such as Hotels not only because of the smell but also in terms of safety.
