H A L dress

I did not find it rude at all we were really one of the few dressed up on both Formal nights. The 2nd Formal night we were trying to see if Tom was the only one wearing a Tux , I am facing the entrance. And I say .... Ah finally there is a tux ...... Then I start to laugh it was just the Wine Sommelier escorting a senior lady to her table [emoji2]

I don't doubt that you were dressed up. I just don't understand people asking why? It's a pretense of formal isn't it? I wouldn't say people were overly dressed on the veendam either but they were on the NA in November. I heard one lady complaining about how people were coming to the mariners brunch on the veendam. She was wearing a tshirt:rolleyes:. I would tell people they looked lovely. To me to ask why someone is so dressed up is an insult.

Personally I love drawing up on the cruise and I wish that they would enforce the policy in a consistent manner. Most of the people on formal nights were dressed appropriately on formal nights, but on the other nights, I saw some crazy outfits allowed in the main dining room.

HAL has Hostesses again? Since when? Years ago every ship had a Hostess but I haven't seen one in ages.

There was a woman doing the seating on the Noordam. Not sure if I would call her a hostess or not.

The best defense is an offense. When they know they are sloppily or carelessly under dressed, it's their recognition of their failure when they criticize someone they know is the one who is appropriate.

That being said, I am totally done with formal nights on HAL in the way I always used to dress. I always wore long dresses and my late DH always wore a tuxedo. He often brought tuxedo as well as his white dinner jacket. I now wear to the knee cocktail dresses at most. I am so disinterested in what anyone else wears these days, I barely look. It is of no importance to me any more. :o

You really don't need to have your DH buy a suite for 3 days on the ship. He can wear a jacket.

Our last few cruises people weren't even dressed up on formal nights in the Pinnacle Grill.

We usually do longer cruises where we have two large suitcases apiece and are able to take both a suit and a sports jacket/pants outfit for my husband. That's when we fly out of our local airport and have one of the sons take us to the airport and handle the bags. We use porters etc at our destination.

For our upcoming Bermuda cruise where we will be driving to Halifax to get a direct flight to Boston we will be handling our own bags in and out of the car which is a task that falls to me. I can barely manage. Therefore we are just taking one bag each. We decided that my husband would just take a sports jacket and pants which he can wear with a shirt and tie on formal nights and a casual shirt on other evenings. We certainly don't need more than one bag each for a seven day cruise and we may even be eating ashore on a few nights.

We are not 'old-timers', just have the pleasure of early retirement and indulging our love to cruise.

There are so many options in cruise lines and for the more common itineraries, i.e. Caribbean and Alaska, you have a myriad of choices. If you do not like formal nights or feel you do not have to comply with what is asked for attire - please consider one of the many cruise line where there are no formal nights as many people sail on HAL BECAUSE of their formal nights.

Don't worry about dressing up. HAL has become very informal. They have been on a cost cutting crusade and there is no longer a true formal night. You can wear almost anything. You can certainly dress up if you like, but for all intents and purposes it is optional.

 

Many of the people on this chat board are old timers who still cling to the old traditions. An officer on HAL told me that they really don't care what people wear.

 

Have fun and dress how YOU like.

I always thought you budgeted luggage fees into your vacation budget.

For a 7 day cruise you can fit everything into a 28 inch suitcase if you know how to pack and not be overweight. Fourteen day cruise may take extra suitcase or not if you know how to pack a carry on.

Agreed. I dress up for formal night but sometimes the MDR can be very warm and I don't want to break into a "flop sweat", so I remove the jacket.

One thing I remeber about her is that she had really white teeth. It's silly but they were bright! I don't think she was there every night and she seemed really inexperienced.

Don't need to buy your husband a suit. A nice sports jacket is just fine. I wear a navy blue blazer with white shirt and tie on formal nights and feel perfectly comfortable. Oh yeah, MDR stands for Main Dining Room. Have a great cruise!!
