A few more thoughts on recent Riviera Med cruise

I’m pretty sure I’ll have excess OBC on my upcoming Riviera cruise, but I don’t think it’s refundable. I recall reading of a way to get casino chips with the OBC and later cash them in for $; do I have that right?

I do not believe that Oceania allows that but I have never tried it

I agree with LHT28 that you cannot do that.

I think of it this way. If the OBC is refundable it is equal to cash so can be spent on anything or withdrawn as cash. Not refundable OBC has no cash value and must be used as a credit on some purchase. So it cannot be used as cash in the casino or as cash payment to gratuities. You can buy a watch or a tour or a massage; something with a profit / markup in the price.

That makes sense; guess I’ll find out for sure next month; as I said I can’t recall what thread I read that in about 3 months ago (ancient history).

Please come back and let us know what happens. A real and current experience is always best. Enjoy your cruise (and the OBC!)

What you might be thinking of is that you can now use your World Card in the slot machines in the casino and it will be charged to your account. What it won't do is use non refundable OBC.

I am pretty sure any OBC should be able to be used for the daily grats, but not any extra grats.

Not to take away from this good review but I would like to comment on a couple of things in it for those considering what O Life options to chose. Our recent cruise was on the Nautica after two cruises on Marina (would be happy to do either again) and we took the excursions because we were sure we could not use $800 in OBC.

1) All but one of the 5 excursions were fine with good local guides though you can get private tours with less people for half the price. The one bad one was a sub for a tour we missed by a few minutes.

2) We still ended up with $400 OBC and had a hard time using it up what with happy hour, free drinks, etc. We had a wonderful dinner the last night in Toscana with Champagne and Wine and still had to visit the shop the last morning to spend the rest (I like the smaller more intimate size of Nautica but the shop has very little compared to Marina and probably Riviera).

3) Also, we like port intensive but this itinerary dropped the first port long before we sailed so we ended up with a sea day at the beginning and at the end. With 8 busy port days in between, 2 sea days made it seem like more a restful holiday not just a rush through many ports.

For future consideration: you can donate unspent non-refundable OBC to the "crew fund."
