Adult only cruising?

Hello! Despite being an avid reader of this forum, this is my first ever post on here.

I have a couple of questions about cruising adult only on P&O. My family and I have always been interested in the idea of being on an adult only ship as there are no young children in our family and we quite like the thought of it being a little more relaxing. However, I am 23 years old and fear that an adult only ship may be a bit boring for me. We enjoy the sail away parties and all the entertainment that you get on the ships. Do the adult only ships do this as well or is the entertainment more down the classical singers sort of route? Furthermore, is the demographic considerably older or is there a good mix of younger adults as well?

Could anyone that's been on an adult only cruise shed a little light for me? I'd be very interested to hear your opinions.

Many thanks!

The entertainment on adult only ships is much the same as on the family ships and yes they still have the sail away parties.

As to the mix of people onboard, that changes and some of it depends when you chose to sail. At the less popular times eg late November or March the adult only ships do tend to have many more, shall we say, mature passengers.

If you go mid summer or a fly cruise you are more likely to get more of a mixture of ages.

We have had some great conversations and fun with people of all ages onboard. I’m sure you would enjoy it even if you are the youngest one there 😀

We are 71 and 79, so probably amongst the majority on Adult Only ships. We like late sitting for dinner, drinks in the bar first and nearly always go to the show afterwards, so don't go to bed early. Not sure I have seen anyone of your age on any of our cruises, but we do tend to do the longer ones 18-19 days and out of school holiday time, so that may be why.

If you sailed on one of the larger ships out of season, there would be very few kids on there I would guess, but as we don't like the bigger ones, perhaps someone else could comment.

I have been sailing with P&O for over 20 years, but until May of this year I had never been on an adults only ship. Then I took a 15 night cruise to Madeira and the Canary Islands on Oriana, chosen on account of itinerary.

The first thing that struck me was the relatively advanced age of most of the pssengers. As a man of advancing years myself, I have become used to there being more passengers younger than me than there are older. On Oriana that was not the case. Indeed at the age of 71 I felt like a relative youngster. The average age of passengers was considerably older than that of those on a Saga holiday I took last year, and there appeared to be few passengers aged under 40. The entertainment was very much geared to the percieved tastes of an older age group. Having said that, my fellow passengers were by and large well travelled and sociable and I had a thoroughly enjoyable cruise in extremely good company. So to answer the OPs questions, if you go on an adult only cruise you may not find many other people of your own age, but you will meet many interesting people of an older generation who will be very happy to socialise with you.

We have been on several Adult only cruises. We are in our early sixties now, but have seen a variety of ages and found them to be friendly. When we went to the Caribbean on one the average age was lower. Like any cruise the age will fluctuate depending on when & where it's sailing. Entertainment was the same as the family ships. What we really like was not having ANY children. When we were on Azura in February parents were letting very young children sleep across the seats in Brodies, adults couldn't get a seat:eek:

Thank you everyone for your responses so far. Although I am young, I'm not particularly bothered by finding other passengers of around my age, nor do I care much about big attractions like waterslides (hence why we have always gone through P&O). We tend to cruise with my grandparents as well and socialise as a family. The thought of no children really does appeal to us.

It was more the entertainment side I was concerned about although I am glad that there are still sailaway parties. Are the shows still the same as well? We are big musical fans and I used to be a dancer so I love that sort of thing.

Hi Lottie, our single friend who we cruise with is 82. She also was a dancer and a singer in musicals, long before your day. She enjoys the shows as do we. Lots of singing and dancing by the Headliners, many of which come from Arts Ed in Turnham Green.

If you don't mind mixing with us oldies, I'm sure you will have a great time.

My boyfriend went on an adults-only cruise with his family a few years ago when he was 19 and met lots of people aged 18-24 roughly who were with their families. He said it was the best cruise he's been on and is still in touch with most of them now! That was July/Aug time I think.
