jamell Posted December 30, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 30, 2017 Hi, need help choosing a cruise, we are first time cruisers in our mid fifties from UK and want to go to Norwegian Fjords around August 2018. Have been looking so far at Royal Caribbean Independance of the Seas and Celebrity Silhoutte but open to any suggestions. We want as few children about as possible, not to interested in dressing up for dining. Any recommendations between RC and Celebrity would be useful, would be looking for balcony cabin. Also what are the chances of leaving booking late and getting a good deal. Thanks. Chris
NantahalaCruiser Posted December 31, 2017 #2 Share Posted December 31, 2017 Check out their itineraries and make sure they include the ports you are interested in. If both itineraries appeal to you, then Celebrity would probably have less children. Don't worry about dressing up. Both lines are much more casual than they were a few years ago. Rare Keith1010 Posted December 31, 2017 #3 Share Posted December 31, 2017 While you will get some help here I would get a Travel Agent who specializes in cruising to help you out on this. We don't know you so even making a recommendation is not easy. There are various lines and itineraries and a range of price points. We can't recommend a Travel Agent so I would ask friends who you know and respect who cruise if they have an agent they could recommend to you and start there. paul929207 Posted December 31, 2017 #4 Share Posted December 31, 2017 We will be on the Pacific Princess up the west coast of Norway. 16 days r/t Southampton starting June 18. The Pacific is a smaller ship (680 passengers) so the ports are not as crowded
Rare Essiesmom Posted December 31, 2017 #5 Share Posted December 31, 2017 You appear to be focusing on ships leaving from Southampton. There are more options if you consider other UK ports, or ports across the channel. Go to http://www.cruisetimetables.com and choose departure ports in the UK and see what might be offered. Or choose ports that interest you in Norway from the Ports of Call list. EM
Rare puppycanducruise Posted December 31, 2017 #6 Share Posted December 31, 2017 We did a 7 night cruise on the HAL ship the Rotterdam last May. It sailed out of Rotterdam (not UK, but not far). It is a smallish ship (1300 passengers), few, if any, children. They also do a 14 night cruise - next time we'll do that one, 7 nights is too short! They also offer similar cruises from Amsterdam on the newer, larger ship Konigsdam. I realize neither of these ships sail out of the UK, so not exactly what you are looking for, but, I offer it as a suggestion. They no longer have formal nights. Hope you enjoy your cruise to Norway whatever cruise you chose, we are looking at booking again.

We cruised late April 2016 on the Magellan for 8 days, sailing from Dundee, and paid just under £400 each Inside Cabin) on a Last Minute Deal. There was a Formal Night but easy to skip it by dining in the Bistro. Magellan was 'adults only' so no children - perfect peace! We are in our early 60s and enjoyed the trip enormously. The Fjords was our 2nd CMV Cruise (3.5 weeks after our first - also on the Magellan) and we returned from our 4th CMV cruise aboard Columbus a little over 2 weeks ago. The savings from booking an inside cabin pay for excursions - and more cruises!
Noodles84 Posted December 31, 2017 #8 Share Posted December 31, 2017 Oceania rarely has children on its small ships, and if they are there, you don't notice. It's always "country club casual" in the dining rooms in the evening, although you may see cocktail dresses and suits on captain's cocktail nights. Being smaller ships, they can get into some more interesting ports than the usual, and the food and service are excellent. They may be more expensive than other cruise lines, but we figure you get what you pay for. Nicole
