Lisbon vs. Porto: Which Best??!!

From the Sidney Morning Herald and other Fairfax newspapers of Australia in mid June, they had this headline: Which Portuguese City Is Best? with these highlights: Portugal’s two biggest cities have a rivalry to match Sydney versus Melbourne with passionate locals who glow with pride about their hometown. Is it better in the north? Or do they have it all in the south? Here’s your form guide..

Personally from visiting both, we found lots to LOVE in Porto and Lisbon. Both wonderful!!! Here are more story highlights: "PORTO: Grittier, cloudier, and teeming with street art, Portugal’s second-largest city has long been overlooked but now it’s nipping at the heels of its more-famous southern sister as travellers discover its affordable, down-to-earth charms. Known as the holy grail for port wine aficionados, Porto might have roots as a sailing port but its modern-day vibe is an unpretentious blend of history, tile-cloaked beauty."

However, there is more to consider: "LISBON: In comparison to Porto, Lisbon is a spring chicken. The city was completely rebuilt in a wide-boulevard, grid style after being flattened by the mother of all earthquakes in 1755. The historic Alfama district, which managed to escape serious damage in the quake, is experiencing the curse of its own historic beauty. Residents are being squeezed out as Airbnb moves in and throngs of tour groups pound its cobblestone streets. Lisbon’s status as one of Europe’s sunniest capitals may just seal the deal. Many fall for the city’s magical afternoon glow as light bounces off the pastel-facades, and sunsets paint the sky candy floss pink."

Lots of added details, visuals, options, etc., to consider in this profile/article. Brings back lots of nice memories from being in both cities last June. More below on my live/blog.

We spent several days in each.

They are different. Lots to see in Lisbon including trip to Sintra and Cascais. You could, and we did, eassily spend thee days in Lisbon.

Porto is smaller. We enjoyed Porto but the highlight for us was renting a car and spending four days in the Douro Valley. We wanted to go to Coinbra (sp) but ran out of time.

IF we only had one day to spend, we would spend it in Libson, hands down.

We found the locals in Portugal friendlier,on balance, than the locals in Spain.

Appreciate this wonderful above, added background and details from iancal. Always helpful and interesting.

From the Boston Globe Travel Section earlier this month, they have this headline: Why Porto is now a part of me with these highlights: The only thing I knew about Portugal before a recent trip was Vasco da Gama, the 15th-century explorer who found the first ocean link from Europe to Asia, via India. Oh, and that bottle of Port wine. After spending a week in Portugal, I am the worst of converts: I’m in love with the centuries-old tile work, the steep alleyways, the sardines that adorn restaurant tables and the best egg custard you will ever put in your mouth, and the fact that the euro goes farther here than in Portugal’s better-known neighbors.

Brings back wonderfully nice memories from a year ago from doing our first visit in Portugal. Great history, food, people, etc., there.

I think its a ridiculous comparison between these two cities. Its kind like saying what is better for a day, New York City or Boston. And the easy answer is BOTH! Porto and Lisbon are completely different...each with their own attractions :).

Agree with Hank above that both cities and areas are wonderful. So glad last year that we were able to experience both of these historic and charming cities.

From the London/UK Evening Standard today, they have this headline: best last-minute travel destinations with these highlights: A short train ride from Lisbon you’ll find the magical town of Sintra. Pena Palace is the standout star of this town with its elaborate tilework, but our favourite spot has to be Quinta da Regaleira for the abundant greenery and Instagram-worthy Initiation Well.

Many ideas for future travel in this profile. Full story at:

We have seen some very attractive TAP transatlantic flight pricing lately. And some very attractive TAP fares within Europe and parts of Africa.

Appreciate this added info and follow-up from iancal. From the Travel Section of the London/UK Guardian this morning, they have this headline: Porto: ready for the limelight with these highlights: A decade ago, the city’s historic centre was badly rundown. Now, having been carefully restored, it’s filled with culture, cafes and unusual shops.

Here some other highlights: "Throughout the city, threaded together by charming old wooden trams, Beaux Arts buildings are being renovated so that new cafés and boutiques can blossom. The Majestic Café, the city’s most famous café, was saved a few years ago from decay and is now back to its former glory. Porto is a good-looking city, its granite buildings packed into a hilly landscape, many of them decorated on the outside with azulejos, the stunning blue and white tiles that are a defining feature of this place. The entrance to the São Bento station is particularly memorable, covered in some 20,000 of these tiles depicting key moments in the history of Portugal."

From the New York Times this morning, they have this headline: Portugal Dared to Cast Aside Austerity. It’s Having a Major Revival with these highlights: At a time of mounting uncertainty in Europe, the country has defied critics who insisted on austerity as the answer to the Continent’s economic and financial crisis.

Much of this major profile is about economics/politics. But, it provides many details as to how their prosperity is happening now. Here are more story highlights that might be of interest: "At a time of mounting uncertainty in Europe, Portugal has defied critics who have insisted on austerity as the answer to the Continent’s economic and financial crisis. While countries from Greece to Ireland — and for a stretch, Portugal itself — toed the line, Lisbon resisted, helping to stoke a revival that drove economic growth last year to its highest level in a decade. The renewal is visible just about everywhere. Hotels, restaurants and shops have opened in droves, fueled by a tourism surge that has helped cut unemployment in half. In the Beato district of Lisbon, a mega-campus for start-ups rises from the rubble of a derelict military factory. The economic about-face had a remarkable impact on Portugal’s collective psyche. While discouragement lingers in Greece after a decade of spending cuts, Portugal’s recovery has pivoted around restoring confidence to get people and businesses motivated again."

There is a good deal more to Portugal besides Lisbon and Porto. Much to see if you can spend more than a day in each area. That is the challenge with cruising.

YES, iancal, this below story helps prove your wise and smart point. From the Wall Street Journal this morning, they had this headline: Vacation in Portugal the Less-Obvious Way with this sub-headline: "Travelers are mobbing the country’s coast in record numbers. But for fewer tourist hordes, deeply rooted charm and one hell of a stargazing party, head to the rural heart of the Alentejo."

Here are more story highlights including a comparison to two decades ago when only 235,000 American visited: By the time I returned in 2016, I had a lot more company. The number of Americans visiting annually soared to 564,000. Since 2015, air capacity between Portugal and the U.S. doubled. This year, Portugal expects around 900,000 Americans—one wave in a tsunami of 25 million tourists drawn by the country’s affordability, food, wine and cultural depth.

Good news for the popularity of Portugal, but maybe it is also smart to look at and consider other potentials and areas to sample in this charming nation. For this one area, the writer shared: "Despite covering nearly one third of the country’s area, the Alentejo is home to only a touch more than 7% of the population. Only about 4% of the Americans who visited Portugal in 2017 bothered to make the trek, though Evora, Alentejo’s picturesque capital is less than a two-hour drive from Lisbon (and nearly three hours from the regions of the Algarve currently afflicted with wildfires)."

From the London/UK Daily Mail earlier this week, they had this headline: Lonely Planet reveals the world's 500 best mealswith highlights about food in Lisbon among: the top food experiences in the world by the travel experts at Lonely Planet. They come top of a mouth-watering list of the world's best 500 culinary experiences that Lonely Planet has ranked for a new tome titled the Ultimate Eatlist - a foodie bucket-list that takes into account not just the taste, but the atmosphere that dishes are eaten in. At pastry stores in Lisbon, Portugal, the Lonely Planet experts say visitors will find the ultimate egg tart.

YES!! We super loved both the settings in and around Lisbon, plus the excellent tasty foods we enjoyed there. Below is one of the many visuals featured with this story. Brings great memories from visiting there last year. More on my full live/blog about nearby top-ranked San Sebastian in NW Spain.

No contest !! Apart from the port lodges Oporto has few tourist attractions, Lisbon is now cool, with something for all plus access to the coast at Castaic / Estoril. Plus Lisbon is probably the most reasonably priced European major tourist city, enjoy it.

Interesting you should say this - I'm heading off for a few nights in Porto (for the first time) in a couple of weeks and have found plenty of things to see and do in the days we're there, so much so that we've decided against our initial plan to do a trip to the Douro valley and will save that for another visit. I've visited Lisbon several times and will be driving down there after my stay in Porto to stay along the coast - in CASCAIS.

Lisbon is one of my favourite cities but I tend to agree with Hlitner's comment that it's pointless comparing the two - they are two different cities in the same country, each with things to offer :)the tourist.

Appreciate these follow-ups and this above excellent summary. Both are very different cities and it is hard to compare them. Sure glad we were able to enjoy and experience BOTH cities. Since it was only a one-day, cruise ship stop, we had wished for more time in Porto compared to our four days in Lisbon. Good reasons to go back to Portugal. Keep up the great sharing.

From the Travel Section of the London/UK Telegraph in mid September, they had this headline: Is overtourism turning Lisbon into the next Venice?with these highlights: “Few destinations have witnessed a boom in tourism over the last few years quite like Portugal. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the country welcomed 6.8m overseas arrivals in 2010. By 2016 that figure had grown to 18.2m – an increase of 168 per cent. Last week Portugal’s economics minister reported that tourism revenue increased by 17 per cent, year-on-year, in 2017, and a further 14 per cent so far in 2018. But at what cost to the experience of both visitors and locals? Unchecked tourism is good for the economy – but it causes problems. Rapid growth means strained infrastructure and overcrowding in big cities and at major attractions.

Also in the article, it is shared: "In both Lisbon and Porto the central downtown areas have become more or less only for tourists. Lisbon’s Baixa district covers 1.5 square kilometres and now has more than 70 hotels, while tourist-oriented restaurants, souvenir shops and big international brands have displaced local businesses." Also included was these details: "Mary Lussiana, Telegraph Travel’s Portugal expert, agrees with the assessment. 'Lisbon is suffering the most, with the narrow cobbled streets so crowded with tourists, particularly in areas such as Chiado, that it is hard to walk around. Locals talk of an invasion and tell stories of long-time tenants being kicked out of their houses to make room for Airbnbs."

Our stay in Porto was very pleasant however the draw for us is the region, not the city.. The highlight for us picking up a rental car and touring the Douro Valley for a week or so.

There are many beautiful areas in Portugal. Porto and Lisbon are very nice but they are only a small part of the charm of this country.

There is no 'best'. Porto and Lisbon are two very different venues with very different attributes.

We love cruising so looked at a river cruise along the Duoro. Despite various companies offering such a trip, we found that each lacked something and in comparison to ocean cruising were much more expensive.

I have now booked a flight to Porto, where will we spend 3 nights, then make our way up the river, possibly by train, spending a couple of nights at various places on the way in a variety of lodgings, and have booked visits etc to places. We then return back to Oporto, where a couple of trips are planned to the north. Then will catch a train to Lisbon for a few nights, from where we fly back to the UK. Overall the trip is 13 days, next June, so good weather but not too hot. We call into Lisbon on our next cruise (sailing Tuesday) hence we are not staying longer. Also being in the UK, it is an easy long weekend break for us.

I have done a lot of research and have info from so many sources which has helped plan this trip, some of which TLCOhio has referred to.

I am really looking forward to this as 'land trips' have given way to cruises in recent years.

Appreciate these very good added comments and nice follow-ups. YES, so many wonderful options for Portugal. It's a place where we would love to return. BUT, for now have other places where we have never been previously.

In just a month, we depart for Athens, Greece, and doing a 20-day sailing with Oceania to Dubai in making our first visits to the Holy Lands, Egypt, Jordan/Petra, Middle East, etc. Then, next summer, for our first time, we will be seeing the Western Canada Rockies, Vancouver, Alaska, etc. After that on our priority list is a first-time for visiting Galápagos, etc. Just need people to send money and/or arrange for me to get commissions as my posts inspire your future travel plans. Or, need to win a big Lottery for more money to explore the world.

Keep up the great sharing for options in Lisbon, Porto, etc. We super loved both historic and charming areas of Portugal.

Appreciate your nice follow-up. Great suggestion for staying in one of the government-run former palaces in Portugal.  We have visited some of those in Spain. Nice, classy options!!  Would love to have you pick up the tab for when we visit in western Canada.  Will be there in late July 2019 when doing, for the first time, Calgary, Banff, Jasper, the Rocky Mountaineer rail adventure, Vancouver, etc., before we board to do our first sailing to Alaska.  BUT, I don't drink coffee.  What part of Canada do you live.  Keep up the great sharing.

From the Travel Section in the London/UK Evening Standard earlier this month, they had this headline: “How to spend the perfect 48 hours in Porto”  with these highlights: “For years it has been in Lisbon's shadow, but now, Porto, with its colourful buildings decorated with pretty azulejos and growing scene of hipster bars and restaurants, is a popular city break destination in its own right.”

One of their first suggestions is: "head to one of Porto's no-frills tabernas, where you can dine alongside locals and enjoy authentic Portuguese home-cooking that will set you up for an afternoon of wandering the city's ramshackle hilly streets. These restaurants are often brightly lit and don't be surprised if there's a TV screen in the corner, but they're a great way to sample local specialities at reasonable prices, such as the "Tripas a moda do Porto," a tripe dish of several meats and beans. We liked Restaurante Irmãos Linos, Taberna de Santo António is also great."
