Lisbon vs. Porto: Which Best??!!

From the Sidney Morning Herald and other Fairfax newspapers of Australia in mid June, they had this headline: “Which Portuguese City Is Best?” with these highlights: “Portugal’s two biggest cities have a rivalry to match Sydney versus Melbourne with passionate locals who glow with pride about their hometown. Is it better in the north? Or do they have it all in the south? Here’s your form guide.”.

Personally from visiting both, we found lots to LOVE in Porto and Lisbon. Both wonderful!!! Here are more story highlights: "PORTO: Grittier, cloudier, and teeming with street art, Portugal’s second-largest city has long been overlooked but now it’s nipping at the heels of its more-famous southern sister as travellers discover its affordable, down-to-earth charms. We spent several days in each.

They are different. Lots to see in Lisbon including trip to Sintra and Cascais. You could, and we did, eassily spend thee days in Lisbon.

Porto is smaller. We enjoyed Porto but the highlight for us was renting a car and spending four days in the Douro Valley. We wanted to go to Coinbra (sp) but ran out of time.

IF we only had one day to spend, we would spend it in Libson, hands down.

We found the locals in Portugal friendlier,on balance,than the locals in Spain.

Brings back wonderfully nice memories from a year ago from doing our first visit in Portugal. Great history, food, people, etc., there.

Agree with Hank above that both cities and areas are wonderful. So glad last year that we were able to experience both of these historic and charming cities.

From the Travel Section of the London/UK Guardian this morning, they have this headline: “Porto: ready for the limelight” with these highlights: “A decade ago, the city’s historic centre was badly rundown. Now, having been carefully restored, it’s filled with culture, cafes and unusual shops.”

With this New York Times story, they had a number of visuals from Portugal that brought back great memories from us being there last June. From the Wall Street Journal this morning, they had this headline: “Vacation in Portugal the Less-Obvious Way” with this sub-headline: "Travelers are mobbing the country’s coast in record numbers. But for fewer tourist hordes, deeply rooted charm and one hell of a stargazing party, head to the rural heart of the Alentejo."

Here are more story highlights including a comparison to two decades ago when only 235,000 American visited: “By the time I returned in 2016, I had a lot more company. The number of Americans visiting annually soared to 564,000. Since 2015, air capacity between Portugal and the U.S. doubled. This year, Portugal expects around 900,000 Americans—one wave in a tsunami of 25 million tourists drawn by the country’s affordability, food, wine and cultural depth.”

Good news for the popularity of Portugal, but maybe it is also smart to look at and consider other potentials and areas to sample in this charming nation. For this one area, the writer shared: "Despite covering nearly one third of the country’s area, the Alentejo is home to only a touch more than 7% of the population. Only about 4% of the Americans who visited Portugal in 2017 bothered to make the trek, though Evora, Alentejo’s picturesque capital is less than a two-hour drive from Lisbon (and nearly three hours from the regions of the Algarve currently afflicted with wildfires)."

No contest !! Apart from the port lodges Oporto has few tourist attractions, Lisbon is now cool, with something for all plus access to the coast at Castaic / Estoril. Plus Lisbon is probably the most reasonably priced European major tourist city, enjoy it.

Interesting you should say this - I'm heading off for a few nights in Porto (for the first time) in a couple of weeks and have found plenty of things to see and do in the days we're there, so much so that we've decided against our initial plan to do a trip to the Douro valley and will save that for another visit. I've visited Lisbon several times and will be driving down there after my stay in Porto to stay along the coast - in CASCAIS.

Lisbon is one of my favourite cities but I tend to agree with Hlitner's comment that it's pointless comparing the two - they are two different cities in the same country, each with things to offer :)the tourist.

Appreciate these follow-ups and this above excellent summary. Both are very different cities and it is hard to compare them. Sure glad we were able to enjoy and experience BOTH cities. Since it was only a one-day, cruise ship stop, we had wished for more time in Porto compared to our four days in Lisbon. Good reasons to go back to Portugal. Keep up the great sharing.

Our stay in Porto was very pleasant however the draw for us is the region, not the city.. The highlight for us picking up a rental car and touring the Douro Valley for a week or so.

We love cruising so looked at a river cruise along the Duoro. Despite various companies offering such a trip, we found that each lacked something and in comparison to ocean cruising were much more expensive.

I have now booked a flight to Porto, where will we spend 3 nights, then make our way up the river, possibly by train, spending a couple of nights at various places on the way in a variety of lodgings, and have booked visits etc to places. We then return back to Oporto, where a couple of trips are planned to the north. Then will catch a train to Lisbon for a few nights, from where we fly back to the UK. Overall the trip is 13 days, next June, so good weather but not too hot. We call into Lisbon on our next cruise (sailing Tuesday) hence we are not staying longer. Also being in the UK, it is an easy long weekend break for us.

I have done a lot of research and have info from so many sources which has helped plan this trip, some of which TLCOhio has referred to.

I am really looking forward to this as 'land trips' have given way to cruises in recent years.

Appreciate these very good added comments and nice follow-ups. YES, so many wonderful options for Portugal. It's a place where we would love to return. BUT, for now have other places where we have never been previously.

In just a month, we depart for Athens, Greece, and doing a 20-day sailing with Oceania to Dubai in making our first visits to the Holy Lands, Egypt, Jordan/Petra, Middle East, etc. Then, next summer, for our first time, we will be seeing the Western Canada Rockies, Vancouver, Alaska, etc. After that on our priority list is a first-time for visiting Galápagos, etc. Just need people to send money and/or arrange for me to get commissions as my posts inspire your future travel plans. Or, need to win a big Lottery for more money to explore the world.

If you can stay in a pousada, the government run hotels in former palaces they are amazing!   We stayed in one near Faro on the algarve, and the food was sublime!  My DH is drooling over the pictures of the custard tarts.

Appreciate your nice follow-up. Great suggestion for staying in one of the government-run former palaces in Portugal.  We have visited some of those in Spain. Nice, classy options!!  Would love to have you pick up the tab for when we visit in western Canada.  Will be there in late July 2019 when doing, for the first time, Calgary, Banff, Jasper, the Rocky Mountaineer rail adventure, Vancouver, etc., before we board to do our first sailing to Alaska.  BUT, I don't drink coffee.  What part of Canada do you live.  Keep up the great sharing.
