Just bring enough small US bills to be able to pay with the exact amount. Some places will give local currency as change.

 

You are correct, but not in Grand Cayman and not in our experience in Jamaica, which are the ports of call referenced by the OP. :)

we have used USD in GC in the restaurants/shops

I don't follow? The OP was asking if it is recommended. Why would be so purchases could be made. As others have responded, it is not needed because dollars are accepted.

My quote was misstated - my fault.

 

US$ are accepted in most Caribbean ports of call and most definitely in Grand Cayman and Jamaica - the ports referenced by the OP - as referenced in my first response #4.

to know the exchange rate .........

 

Cayman in particular messes folks up ..........

 

I use the XE app on my phone. It updates exchange rates daily if you have a data connection (cell data or wifi).

 

And can shows rates across several currencies.
