Are the transaction fees to use the ATM on the ship higher than using a regular ATM in Europe? We are on the Star.

Not sure what the fee is in Europe (will find out in 8 days:)) but on the Gem it was $5 per transaction plus whatever your bank charged.

You are much better off using a land ATM connected with a bank in the country you are visiting. There are no fees on using that bank only what YOUR bank will charge you.

Seriously?!?! I didn't know that! I hated taking money out of the ATM on the ship!!

It also depends what currency you need?? You don't want to be stuck with 10000 pesos.

$100 at 3% equals $103

$100 at atm equals $105 plus what your bank charges (believe mine is $2.75)

So yes, it can be better to use the casino (all depends how much you need):)

yes, but I presumed the withdrawal would be more than $100, that wouldn't pay for more than a few drinks and a snack for two at most places

That's what I took out for our day at Sea World, mostly for small purchases as larger purchases went on a card.

Propriatary ATM's (such as those on ships, 7-11's and retail places generally) invariably charge more than bank linked ones: usually $5 or more vs. the standard $3+/-. And many card issuers (my UBS for example) have no charge and refund up to $3 of other bank's fee.

7-11 now uses citibank in most states for its atm's. the price is the same as a non citibank user at its banks...or if you have a citibank card its free.
