Vigo and Cartagena your thoughts

Both these places are easy to do yourself, Cartagena is a lovely port, the centre is near the port. Vigo centre is more uphill but nice to wander around. There will be plenty of taxi's once you disembark if you fancy something further afield.

We've taken the ferry from near the ship to the Cies Isles and the steward on board suggested that we take the ferry across to the other side of the river the next time, which we will do, because it's just a short journey.

In Cartagena, a fellow cruiser went to the tourist office at the gate, and they suggested a taxi ride with a commentary in English on a CD... he enjoyed it because he saw all the places like the Roman theatre. We went to the Marine museum once- anyone who's a senior, take passport for cheaper entry! :)

Cartagena is supposed to be famous for hot chocolate, which some cruisers drank at those cafes near the dock

I too I too can recommend boat trip to Cies Island really beautiful beaches and scenery.

In Cartagena did a ships tour Tapas Trail it was brilliant walked all around Cartagena with a great guide and had tapas ( different ones at each) stop and took in the Roman remains. The guide was a Spanish girl who was studying English and had handpicked all the bars herself. It was an excellent tour.

I agree that both are great for diy exploration. The only other good option from Vigo - if you feel you have had enough of Spanish Cities - is to take a tour to Santiago de Compostela, which is a beautiful small town.

On our last 2 visits to Vigo we've got a taxi to Playa de Samil (or Praia de Samil in Galician) which has a lovely promenade, 2 kids outdoor swimming / paddling pools, plenty of fair priced family friendly restaurants and a nice sandy beach with lots of rock pools. Our 6 year old son loves it and the taxi fare was €8 each way (much cheaper than P&O's official excursion).

Before our son came along we visited the Spanish Civil War Shelter & Museum in Cartagena. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but I enjoyed it and easily walkable from the port.

All the best.

Damian

Vigo - the area near the port is nice enough to explore on your own if you have never been before. Last time we went (2 yrs ago), there was a sightseeing tour bus at the port entrance which took you further away and you get to see a lot more of the town.

Side streets away from the main shopping area feel a little creepy and the coastal area to the right of the port entrance as you come out is a little run down and best avoided IMO.

In Cartegena take the red hop on hop of bus which is by the port and then go to the roman ampitheatre its cut price ticket with the bus ticket

Ah, thanks for that- there wasn't a HOHO bus when we last went, a few years back. :)

There is an old fortress on top of a hill at Vigo which makes for a pleasant walk of you have plenty of energy. We did that last time we were there and found a bar to enjoy a drink or two. We're going there again at Easter and will probably do the same. To be honest, I don't think Vigo has a lot to offer.
