I am interested in purchasing Mexican folk art ( not made in Asia) , pottery, jewelry, textiles and tile . Please advise in those ports the best places to purchase these article at a reasonable price. Thank you.

Hi,

The local tribe with artwork near Puerto Vallarta is the Huichol.

They are known for beadwork that can come in the form of jewelry, animals, wall hangings etc.

Here are some examples:

I have bought from a store on the malecon in Puerto Vallarta where they usually have a native person working.

I have seen even more interesting work here in Sayulita where some ships have day tours:

It is definitely NOT made in China!!!

Also in the town of San Jose del Cabo(near Cabo - take a ship tour or local taxi) there is an art district with local artists/artisans/natives showing their wares,

You might not be there for the art walk but you can walk during the day instead.

We have visited a wonderful shop in Puerto Vallarta for many years now. They sell Majolica pottery which is made in Mexico. It has Morrocan influence and is absolutely gorgeous. We buy something every trip. They have something in all price ranges and take dollars as well as credit cards.

The name is Majolica Antica and the address is 191 Corona Street. They are about 2 blocks off the Malecon. Google map it - it's easy to find.

Do you happen to remember the name of this store or maybe where it's located on the Malecon?

There are two stores, on the PV Malecon, that sell Huichol Art. One of them often has a Huichol Native actually producing art works in the store. Just stroll along the Malecon in "Centro" starting at the Rosita Hotel and you will eventually see both stores. On most days there is a Huichol Native who sells his own art on the small island in the middle of the Riu Cujale. If you simply continue on the Malecon until you get to the river, and then walk down the steps in front of "Oscars" (we do not recommend dining at Oscars) you will be on the island. The most interesting Huichol art involves covering wooden sculptures with tiny beads set in wax. The beads are put into the wax one by one you can see large pieces with 10s of thousands of beads. We have a Huichol made Iguana in our family room that has long been one of our favorite pieces of art.

Just keep in mind that the more expensive pieces are open to negotiation :).
