Radiance Solarium retractable roof

Recommended Posts

For anyone who has done the South Pacific itinerary on Radiance - as it's a warm weather itinerary (we will be sailing in December) , did they open the retractable roof on your cruise, or did it remain closed? We sailed on Radiance to New Zealand a couple of years ago, and the roof remained closed the entire cruise. The weather was not very warm in New Zealand, but it was lovely during the first and last few days when we were leaving and returning to Sydney.

We did a Sydney - NZ - Sydney cruise on the Radiance this last December. The roof on the solarium remained closed for the entire cruise. Thank goodness, as the weather was very cold and windy. The solarium area (with the closed roof) was much more popular than the outside pool area, which was almost deserted.

Thats a pity - I would have thought they would open it on nice days (after all why have a retractable roof then?) Especially as the main pool area is full of kids and teens (2 of which will be mine :D) and the solarium is for adults only. On our cruise on Rhapsody to NZ it was also closed the whole time which was good given that the weather on NZ cruises is usually much cooler, but on the few nice days we had it was pretty hot in the closed solarium.

But also bear in mind that if its a stinking hot day people want to be able sit outside in comfort , which they can do around the pool , with the roof closed , and the air conditioning making everything sweet:D

Ah... if it's airconditioned then that makes sense then.

On our NZ cruise it probably wasnt as it wasnt hot outside, so the solarium was humid. I'm assuming on hot days it would be....

But I still wonder why they would put a retractable roof if they never seem to open it.

The roof is also kept closed on sea days to stop the wind from whistling around and blowing up your skirt.:D

The day can be very pleasant outside , but if a ship is travelling at top speed , and you are sitting say 14 stories above the ocean , it doesnt take much for that wind to become quite intense.

Makes sense on sea days I guess... I remember that wind... specially round NZ!

The roof remains closed but there are a couple of panels that do not have glass. On the 30 plus days it is cooler than the outside pool but is a little humid.

There were the days at sea where it was extremely windy by the outside pool, so it was nice to go to the solarium and use that area.

The ship has always sailed in Alaska so a glassed in solarium was an extremely well planned decision.

A great area to rest on sea days with the Park Cafe right there at your disposal for lunch. Wonderful foccacias, salad bar and sweets. There is a drink station there as well where you can have hot or cold drinks.
