Questions about self service laundry on Sapphire Princess

We will be on Sapphire Princess in about a month. We've never been on any Princess ship before.

 

I'm too lazy to do a search on the board, so here's my question about the self-laundry setup:

 

1. Are they coin-operated?

2. Does this mean we have to get coins?

3. Do people bring coins from home? Or are the coins readilly available on board?

4. Should we just bring fabric softner/detergent from home (small amounts, of course).

There are little machines where you can purchase laundry soap or softner in the laundry rooms, but if you can find the purex all in one sheets, they work great.

Quarters are readily available either in the change machine (if it's not empty) or from the purser's desk.

Make sure you get change in advance. You don't want to have to go to the purser's desk when you are ready to do laundry and have people move ahead of you.

For the detergent I found that the Purel all in one sheets to be great. They do not weigh much and take up very little space. They are presently on sale BOGO at CVS. You might also consider taking the Shout Color catcher sheets . That way you can throw everything into one machine and save yourself some time and money. Also pack a folding net hamper in your suitcase. That makes it so much easier to take all the clothes to the laundromat. (Also available at CVS, or other retailers)

Go to the pursers desk early on so that you have the change and so do they. The change machines rarely seem to work. The detergent is rather overpriced but that is a personal opinion.

Our only issue is the "change" machine. We have used the laundry three or four times, the change machine was full and working oly one time. Having to run down to the purser's desk (casino was closed being we were in port) was more than annoyance. $5 in quarters get packed now.

Although not directly related to Sapphire, thought I would share my very recent experience with laundry on the Crown Princess. Washing machine and driers were a 40 minute cycle and cost 2 dollars each. Washing was done fine, but I thought the drier was less than efficient - even after a full cycle the clothes were still quite damp.

 

Very handy to get laundry done though, less packing!

I'm now Elite and get my laundry done but when I did laundry on the ship, I would stop by the Purser's Desk at some point when it wasn't busy and get enough coins for laundry. That way, I was prepared for when I did want to do laundry. Unless you're driving to port, the weight of bringing quarters in your luggage isn't worth it when it's so easy to get the change onboard.

Just off the CB last month and each washer and dryer was $1. We bring our own quarters in case the machine is out so we don't have to go searching for working change machine. We also bring a couple of the Purex 3-in-1 sheets a few other posters mentioned. I like that it's not a liquid or powder and won't spill in our luggage. Plus the 3-in-1 sheets are a detergent, softener, and anti-static sheet. It also makes everything in the luggage smell nice as well.

There was some question a week or so ago about the laundry rooms being closed while in Alaskan waters, due to environmental concerns. However, I found the laundry room open midway through the cruise, between Skagway and Juneau when I went to iron a couple shirts that got wrinkled in the suitcase.

I always do laundry just so that I don't have to over pack. I usually bring change with me and also the soap. I find it very convenient.

We used the Purex sheets (the unscented type) on our last cruise and they worked great (and didn't make our girl break out in a rash like regular detergent does). As others have said, if you don't want to lug a roll of quarters with you, you can go to the passengers services desk a day or so before you do laundry so you have the coins.

The washers and dryers on the Sapphire Princess are so much nicer now. We were on the ship in December and I had to wash some things (won't send out laundry, even though we can have it done for free). They had new washer's and dryers that are the stack version. These aren't the agitator versions anymore, but like my Whirpool Duet's that don't beat up the clothes. I want to say there was 8 sets now in the laundry room, so it was much nicer.

 

I've brought quarters from home, just because we had them, but there also was a change machine in the laundry room. Was only $1.00 for each load wash or dry. We were just on the Crown, and it was the older machines. They did take so much longer to dry.

We are from the UK. So will have to change coins when onboard.

How much is it to wash and dry a load ?

Also is there ano iron we can use? Or do we pack a travel iron ( on Disney cruise we weren't allowed an iron, in room incase of fire )

You use your cruise card in the machine in the laundry room and it gives you tokens.

The cost is charged to your account.

I think the loads (washer/dryer) are $2 or $3 now each?

Irons are provided. (They are a prohibited item to bring onboard).

They won't allow you on with an iron. There should be an iron and an ironing board in the laundromat. I believe the cost has gone up quite a bit to do laundry.

 

You are allowed to bring on a steamer, so if you'd rather do your own ironing in your room, consider using a handheld travel steamer.
