Jeff...your pictures of the partial transit of the Panama Canal were absolutely AMAZING. That's one cruise that my dad always wanted to do. We didn't get the chance to before he passed but I would love to experience that someday in his honor.

He would've been in awe at how the ship goes through the locks. Thank you for sharing those amazing pics

Hey Brianna!! Always glad to have you aboard. Sounds like our dad's were alike in that respect. My dad loved mechanical things and would have been fascinated with how the locks worked. I'm so glad that I got to cruise with him one time. Here's to our Dads! :beer-toast:

Thanks for reading and welcome to Cruise Critic! :)

A group of sailboats approaches the Panama Canal…..

Hi Jeff--great review.

I was the lecturer on board the Pride who did the Academy of Fun and also did the Panama Canal lecture before we arrived, and I did some research on the cost of going through the Canal. For small sailboats it's not terribly expensive: if they are less than 50 feet they pay $800, 50-80 feet pay $1300, 80-100 feet pay $2000, and above that it's $3000.

Happy sailing!

Thanks so much for stopping by and posting that information! :) Regretfully, we did not attend your lecture, but our friends did and said it was very good. Were you the one that did the announcing over the PA? Now you have me thinking, since the three sailboats went through lashed together, did they pay just for one passage or three? :D

Loved the Transit pics.

Wonderful pictures Jeff! The Panama Canal is on my bucket list...and think the partial transit would be perfect!!

Patti and I thank you! I was afraid that we were posting to many, but it was to hard to decide which ones not to use! :D

I did not do the announcing over the PA. That was Jose, and he's a local from Panama City.

With the three sailboats lashed together they would still pay for three passages. They lash together like that because it will get them toward the front of the queue more quickly than if they go through individually. Recreational craft are the last in priority to go through and so they can sometimes wait days to get through the locks. By lashing together they can bump up and get through more quickly.

I looked up the cost of Panama Canal transit for cruise ships. The "old" locks charge $138 per berth and the new locks charge $148 per berth.

I was actually on the bridge when they got the bill from the Canal authority--it was $379,000 for the Pride to go through for the partial transit. We got a discount, but no one could explain why.

Thanks again for sharing this information! The Panama Canal truly fascinates us, and someday we will do a full transit. I wish we could have met on board. :D

I just finished your latest update and have to thank you for your detailed explanation AND wonderful pictures of your partial transit through the Panama canal. I had an idea of how the locks worked, but your detailed description and pictures really showed "how" they work. I'd love to do a Panama Canal cruise one of these days and would actually love to do a full transit, but there's that little issue of getting the actual time to do something like that. Thank you for sharing this experience!

We awoke at 7:30am. It was a partly sunny day and the seas were pretty choppy, which explained why we were rocking and rolling so much……

At 8:30am we made our way down to the Normandie Restaurant for the Sea Day Brunch. We figured that with the seas so rough there wouldn’t be many people there, but boy were we wrong. The line was fairly long, but it was moving quickly. I had forgotten that with so many veteran cruisers aboard, a little rocking and rolling wouldn’t deter anybody!

Here is the Sea Day Brunch menu……

We used our free drink coupons today. I had a screwdriver, while Patti ordered a Malibu bay breeze. We each had some breakfast cake…..

I had my usual ranchos hueveros with a side order of corned beef hash…..

Patti had a cheddar and tomato omelet with a side order od turkey bacon…..

After the brunch, Patti went to the 10am Bingo session, while I made my way up to the Red Frog Rum Bar to see Winston, and get my Thirsty Frog Red fix. I had taken the camera, and got some shots along the way. Here’s the stairway up to David’s Steakhouse…..

After hanging out with Winston for a while, I made my way down to the casino for the blackjack tournament. I entered twice, but could not make enough to make it to the final table.

Patti went to the afternoon session of Bingo but couldn’t cash in. Afterwards she walked around taking some pictures of the artwork in the staircases…..
