Are Hawaiian Shirts the new evening wear?

Ok, I must have missed the fashion statement memo regarding Hawaiian shirts. They look attractive and comfortable. I'm going to get a few for my next cruise in February.

The good thing about them is they hide the beer gut. :D:D:D

Maybe it's just me, but I kinda think that a $145 Tommy Bahama's shirt on a guy is pretty chic. And appropriate for chic night.

You are definitely not alone. A Tommy is more than appropriate for a 'vacation' cruise during 'Chic' nights. Personally I would be more involved in what I was eating and who I was talking to than fretting about what folks are wearing.

Just back off Silhouette Baltic cruise and couldn’t believe the number of Hawaiian shirts being worn in the evening including formal oops I mean evening chic nights! Did I miss the memo? I’m off shopping tomorrow!

On Hawaiian itineraries they used to be classed as formal wear before the big Evening Chic change! :)

I'm not against Tommy Bahama style shirts. Although Celebrity states that designer jeans and shirts with collars are acceptable it is MY personal opinion that these do not fall in the category of "chic". I still think that wearing a football jersey or any t-shirt does no meet the criteria. I quote, "the meaning of "chic"

Yes this thread can go on and on however we are all entitled to our personal opinions and comments.

You are right a football jersey to most people is not chic and I don’t think anyone on this board is disputing that. The question brought up was someone wearing it at the Martini Bar which is appropriate as per Celebrity rules.

Maybe people hold Celebrity to a higher standard because of Modern Luxury, or Chic. Apparently they're wrong, no better than NCL and all the other mass market cruise lines.

Actually Celebrity IS a mass market cruise line. One which has removed the requirements for formal attire from its dress code.

On one of the very first chic nights, a woman was sitting at a bar on the Summit wearing a Peyton Manning football jersey with a big number 18 on it. A pair of white shorts and sandals completed her outfit. She was not at a football game. Therefore, her attire was inappropriate and it was an insult to other guests. It was NOT "chic" in any way. What she paid for that shirt is irrelevant. Nothing is a matter of "The price makes everything right."

Seems like you are fairly new to the CC boards, so welome! Dress code threads are a hot topic.

I presume you are completely serious about this judgemental statement? It brought a smile to my face!

Perhaps you need to look into some of the other cruiselines where you might stand a chance (although a slight one at that) of not being insulted by what other guests are wearing at the bars, or anywhere else for that matter.

Happy cruising!

Absolutely mind blowing that someone has an issue with this. Someone needs a hobby.

Yes, but I’m so looking forward to Doug & Cindy’s ‘Chic’ thread . Hope you’re reading along Doug - I know now it will be so entertaining, just like your others ;p.

Personally I often wear Hawaiian/Caribbean style shirts. In fact I started wearing them in the 70's before the TV show Magnum PI came on the air and made them popular (and twice the price :mad: )

I always bring a few on vacation and yes, wear them to the dining room or Blu now and then.

But, but, but, it's THEIR vacation, so they can wear whatever they want, no matter how appropriate it is to the situation. Just ask them. ;--p

I think a button up flowered shirt is quite appropriate for dinner.

I wore a, not that it matters a Tommy Bahama brand, camp shirt (read hawaiian shirt) each night we ate at BLU on Silhouette this past January. Never had the issue raised to me nor did I feel the hairs rising on the back of my neck with any feeling of being inappropriate attire or anyone looking/commenting on my attire. We ate in BLU, I guess 7 times on a 12 day cruise. We ate at Muranos on first chic night that I recall.

Bibb overalls and a t-shirt?

We were on Mariner of Seas many years ago with the 'HOGS of the seas', I think that is the group's name. They had chartered enough rooms to have the whole bottom section of the MDR. On formal night (then) leather vests/etc was considered formal with t-shirts. The wait staff wore doo rags and white t-shirts.

..... And I've never heard of a dress code to visit a bar on a ship. In fact, before first seating, many bars frequently have a mix of those that are dressed for dinner and others that haven't yet changed. ,,,. :):):)

you might want to give Cunard a miss then - I believe some of their bars are off limits after 6pm if you're not wearing the evening's dress code. No fancy designer shirts (Hawaiian or otherwise) but your welcome to wear your Polyester Dinner Jacket

You are dead wrong, the dress code applies only to the Main Dining Room., has been that way for close to ten years. This is an established fact and is not questionable any more. Does not apply to Specialty restaurants, bars, lounges, casino or any other part of the ship. A football shirt is absolutely Appropriate at the Martina bar. Sorry but that’s the way it’s been for a long time.

Disclaimer Not commenting on my feelings just the facts.

Oh dear, I mostly always agree with your posts, but if you check out the dress code on the website, it does say that the dress code applies to the theater. I was very surprised to read that and don't know when they changed it. Whether it's enforced or not is another question, but it is there in black and white.

I concur on the Hawaiian shirts. They meet the dress code and no one should look down on anyone who chooses to wear one, regardless of the designer. My husband has a few linen guayaberas that he likes to wear in the Caribbean. They are cool and comfortable and I think he looks handsome in them. Is it appropriate in the Baltics? Alaska? Is a kilt appropriate in the Caribbean? That depends on your culture and your preference.

You are correct of course about the theater but I didn’t include that because it hasn’t been enforced for years.

I lived in Fiji for 4 years and have a large collection of Bula shirts (Fijian equivalent). I am looking forward to my next cruise so that I can get them out again. I think that type of shirt has been becoming more fashionable in general over the last couple of years. Bula shirts are appropriate for any occasion.

This subject came up years ago on Cruise Critic. At the time, someone from Hawaii posted a reply similar to the following.

Aloha shirts manufactured for local use are considered formal wear in business and government and are thus regarded as equivalent to a shirt, coat, and tie (generally impractical in the warmer climate of Hawaii) in all but the most formal of settings

Yikes!! I usually just read these threads and smile.

<snip>

I have to say we were on a cruise many years ago and my Pittsburgh Steelers Football team was in the Super Bowl. The game was on our formal night. I wore a long black skirt, black heels, my pearls, and a Steeler Jersey. To each his own, lets just all have fun!

I want to cruise with you. Go, Raiders! :D

Best wishes!

Just like the shirts are still popular, Magnum PI is returning to TV this fall as new series.

Definitely "Like" this comment! But I'm not sure if Doug and Cindy are ready to venture out past food and soda to start commenting on chic dress.
