countingmomma Posted September 1, 2018 #1 Share Posted September 1, 2018 I don't know why I didn't think to ask the question earlier. How is the Verizon service in Anchorage (pre-cruise), and in the port cities - Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan?
tntcardz Posted September 2, 2018 #2 Share Posted September 2, 2018 We had Verizon service at Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway no problem. Aug11th through the 18th. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
2nGlenn Posted September 2, 2018 #3 Share Posted September 2, 2018 Verizon service was pretty good for our land portion of the cruise as well. Inside Denali park the cell reception drops a bit. But at the major places on land, Verizon was just great with 4G grade service. At sea is at sea however. Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan ports of call all had service in town. My inlaws that traveled with us have some other phone company and it was not nearly as good coverage.
syesmar Posted September 3, 2018 #4 Share Posted September 3, 2018 In August, service was great in Juneau, Ketchikan (Totem Bight + Ward Creek and Lake trails), and Anchorage + Seward Highway to Portage Valley Recreation Area. (Did not visit Skagway). :)
TwinMamainMN Posted September 4, 2018 #5 Share Posted September 4, 2018 We didn't have any issues with cell service and we have Verizon too. In fact, the kids called Grandma and Grandpa back home in Minnesota while we were at Mendenhall Glacier, just to say "Grandma! I see a glacier!" We had service going in and out of port too. cruiseguy1016 Posted September 4, 2018 #6 Share Posted September 4, 2018 You will have good service with Verizon in all of the cities that you mentioned.
Midwestoalaska Posted September 4, 2018 #7 Share Posted September 4, 2018 I had a stronger signal in the towns you mentioned than I do at home. You will have no problems.
Dancing Shoes Posted September 5, 2018 #8 Share Posted September 5, 2018 Be sure to wait until you are off the ship before you turn off airplane mode. Verizon was great at all of our ports.
Hoyaheel Posted September 17, 2018 #9 Share Posted September 17, 2018 We had good coverage with Verizon in the larger ports (Ketchikan, Juneau, Sitka), not so much in smaller places (Wrangell, Haines, Icy Strait Point). It was nice for me to be forced to shut off:hearteyes: We did not opt for internet on the ship, and for the most part I didn't read my work emails - just posted a couple photos on facebook now and then and caught up afterwards. There were ports where we could use the telephone but no data (including texting), which was sort of odd, but oh well. We survived just fine without it. (though we REALLY needed to find one of the 2-3 spots at Icy Strait Point where we had coverage to email my in-laws and ask them to get some extra fuel for us as we flew home from Alaska straight into Hurricane Florence prep :o)
countingmomma Posted September 19, 2018 Author #10 Share Posted September 19, 2018 We did have great coverage on land EXCEPT when we arrived in Vancouver. I just used the WiFi in the hotel there.

Interesting - we had no problem with Verizon in Vancouver Aug 28-31.
JasmineB Posted December 11, 2018 #12 Share Posted December 11, 2018 This is really good news, I was just debating on if I'd need to purchase a wifi package, but if I can check mail briefly at each port, that's enough for me. I'm on vacation after all! I have the Princess 250 free Elite minutes as well, so that's more than I could need for a 7 day cruise.

There were places to get free wifi in most ports.
