Topless sun deck on Maasdam: Another dress code thread?

A topic I have never seen come up on CC before - Maasdam now has a public topless sun-bathing deck - aft deck 9 in full public view from the aft deck 10- Navigation - aft pool railing, as well as anyone transiting to the Lido from Deck 9 aft corridors.

"Topless Deck - Adults Only" - only one small red sign on the outer of two doors leading to the aft deck 9, but no warning notice sign coming down the stairs or looking over the aft-pool deck 10 railing.

Yes, I understand this is "normal" in European beach areas but is not a typical Northern American outdoor tradition. There could be other areas on ship that are not public thoroughfare areas that could accommodate this activity, without forcing others to be unwilling or unwitting witnesses. The two aft-wrap cabins on Deck Nine (220 and 205) look directly across this topless sun bathing deck preventing using these cabin decks for taking photos or just enjoying their more expansive 180 degree viewing options.

Sign of the times?

Is more public nudity now the norm on other HAL ships, or other ship cabana areas? If not, why just the Maasdam - why no warning to other passengers upfront this is now official passenger policy for in the formerly public transit and deck areas.

Should those who want to engage in topless sunbathing be confined to reserving verandah deck cabins only. If those in ocean view cabins are the ones demanding topless bathing, should this topless deck be confined to the lower ocean view cabin decks only.

Did I miss this change in ship policy? Was this disclosed in any promotional HAL literature? Have others had similar experiences on other HAL ships?

If you don't take this as some major personal affront directed at you...perhaps all the signs, official notices and other warning wouldn't be required.

If you understand that this is common in Europe, (and other parts of the world as well), then why should North American values overpower others?

Holland America Line is a north American based cruise line serving primarily a north American passenger base and the only language on this cruise is still English - there is no bi-lingual component which is often the case when there is a certain percentage of Europeans or other non-English speaking language groups onboard.

Why have any clothing restrictions for passengers in any public areas using your logic? You make no sense. I am sorry you took the tone you did in your response.

Sounds like the OP had to make a lot of trips to check the view from every possible angle.

We are in one of the impacted cabins, and no we do not like this unwelcome intrusion on our regular HAL expectations about public nudity.

Nude sunbathers have other location options, if this is the new HAL policy. Why should they take priority over the expectations of other passengers who were not expecting to be confronted with this scene during normal ship board activities. Your response and attitude is not appreciated. But thank you for sharing it. It was expected and unfortunately may chill a full discussion on this abrupt change of HAL policy.

I am primarily surprised if clothing-optional is now the new HAL onboard policy it did not create as much discussion as only collared shirts required on Gala Nights - according to the responses so far why even expect collared shirts?

One topless bathing location doesn't make Maasdam a clothing optional ship, or HAL a clothing optional cruise line. But rguy123 and I are the ones overreacting...got it.

One small sign on one door to a clothing optional public location does not establish sufficient notice, ergo this now becomes a clothing optional onboard public activity for any and all sensibilities.

When did clothing optional in public spaces become HAL policy?

I honestly am at a loss here. The OP is on a sailing going to Tahiti and the South Pacific for a close up of culture and the islands. that's why she chose the special EXEC cruise on the Maasdam from what she has posted in the past.

Well, guess what? This is what a lot do on the islands.

I haven't seen it before but a sign warning you is more than adequate. We've certainly been to enough beaches in Europe and elsewhere where people are topless.

It's not uncommon where the OP is going so this is a good way to get used to it ;)

I am not sure that 'topless' is the same as 'clothing optional'. Mr Colbe says that he will check on this serious problem when we board in Papeete. He may need to do several checks just to be sure before he reports back.

I’m as prudish as they come, but hey, they are only boobs. I know the area to avoid if I so choose. Clothing optional in ONLY one area of the ship. Just one.

Could be worse; could be looking at man boobs all day long..................oh wait

With the reported average age of a HAL cruiser I don't know if that is a good idea!

[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]. Topless is different from clothing optional. I mean , no one is actually naked , just from the waist up, right? Personally, I don’t care. I’ve done some topless bathing in my day and am not offended by it in the least. I certainly topless sunbathe on my cruise ship balcony [emoji16] And honestly, it’s kind of a snoozer. See sign, turn head and keep walking. But with that said, if you cannot avoid seeing it from your balcony, then I’d complain as you find it offensive.

Men go topless on every cruise line, on every ship, even with children around ...... and I've certainly seen plenty of men that could use some over the shoulder boulder holders! Call them breasts or pecs - they are only skin .... no big deal in my opinion. I have always felt Americans are very prudish in this regard and the "taboo" of women being topless is very sexist.

I know HAL has quite a large German clientele, especially on their more exotic cruises - perhaps this small change is meant to appeal to that client base, especially with Maasdam doing more trips in tropical locales

At the least, I would think HAL should mention it to anybody who books a cabin that can look down on the topless sunbathing deck...who knows, HAL just might find that it is another revenue generating opportunity as maybe those cabins can be sold at a premium?

It never stops to amaze me how prude some US Passengers are. Almost like some Muslim Middle Eastern countries.

For your information OP, there is nowadays on nearly every sailing a large contingent of European passengers, the vessel is DUTCH by the way, you are on European territory when sailing HAL. There is ONE small area devoted to less prudish guests. I am sure that the favourite American hangout, The Casino, is MUCH larger and potentially far more damaging.

I guess it doesn't fit so well with OP's endorsement of HAL as being the "midwestern" line of the Carnival fleet?

Personally, I enjoy thinking of HAL evolving into a more sophisticated and global line, given her wide range of itineraries around the globe.

I have no issue at all with this change.

I'm totally amazed. I was going to ask you if it came up in another thread, and then realized (from your other thread) that you are currently on board.

Do you, or anyone else, know if this is just for Maasdam, (and perhaps for certain itineraries), or is it going fleet wide?
