Nelson and beach by bus

Wanting to visit Nelsons dockyard in the morning and beach afternoon. In port from 9am to 5pm. Would be have enough time to do this alone by bus? If so which beach I've read the 22 bus goes to beaches. How long should we allow to get to each place and more importantly back to the ship.
