We had just boarded Pearl in Seattle, and were being taken about the ship by a nice young lady who met us at the point where you get your glass of champagne.

As we were walking down the hall, we passed a ship's officer - a man with responsibility in housekeeping. My Dad is a real jokester on vacation and he's pretty funny sometimes.

The officer asked us if there was anything he could do for us. Dad said something about wanting a puppy delivered to his room. The officer said "no problem", took out his phone, and talked to someone.

Noticing that the officer was acting businesslike, Dad said he was just kidding. The officer said not to worry, that he would have his request taken care of.

When we got to the room, a towel animal in the form of a dog was waiting on Dad's bed.

That was a 100% class act, and I am surprised I just now remembered to share it with you.

The Pearl is the best ship I have ever sailed on. What more is there to say?

Nice story and what a great example this officer set for the cabin steward that received his instructions to leave the "puppy" for your dad.

It's little things like that gesture that leave a good impression on people and just may bring them back to, in this case, NCL.

Happy Cruising!
thinking the same thing..how just a small gesture could be the high
point on someone s cruise..i would certainly remember this if it happen d to me..

I've cruised on Princess, Carnival, HAL,
NCL, Hurtigruten and a couple of even smaller lines in the past. HAL is (for now) my favorite!

Did the officer have a bunch of stripes and not so much hair? It sounds like it could have been Michel Klieverik, the Hotel Director. He has a very quick wit and is very people-oriented.

Thanks. This reminded me of our trip in April. I should have posted it when I returned but things go too busy but it shows to me at least out great NCL service can be. The concierge on the Dawn back in April was Ruth. I have had her for a concierge for three other cruises. While on my cruise in January on the Majesty, I was talking with the Concierge and told her about my upcoming cruise in April. I also told her that I would be taking my niece and nephew on their first cruise. I told her about how my niece loved to see my pictures of the towel animals left in my cabin. When we arrived in our cabin on the Dawn, I had a note from Ruth welcoming me and my niece and nephew. We also had a towel animal and new one every night. That was true customer service and why I continue to love NCL.

We have been on NCL ships several times as you can see from my signature. When we were on the Norway in 2001, we made a comment to the cabin that our daughter, then 11, loved the mints on her pillow. He left a whole handful of mints on her pillow every night after the comment. She was thrilled.
We haven't encountered any bad service on any NCL ship. We always try to show interest in our waiters/stewards/etc. asking where they are from and how long they have been working on cruise ships, about their families, etc. I agree that if you treat people with respect and show an interest in them, you will be treated nicely in return.
Some people think they are entitled to everything and they are the ones who just don't get it!! (slight little pun)
I have seen rude, arrogant people treat our servers/stewards like dirt. When I see it, I always make an effort to go to that server, etc. and say something nice to them to try and make up for the rudeness of our fellow passengers. The employees on the ships work very hard, live in close quarters, don't have much time to themselves and are NOT second class citizens just because of the jobs they currently have.
My two cents....

Just wondered if it could have been her.
She was a young asian lady, but I do not recall her name. They escort you through the main lobby and point out lots of sights, on the way to the restaurant. I suppose if we boarded later we would have been escorted right to the cabin!

It was a lot to take in - the ship is beautiful and so much nicer than other ships we have been on. The staff is great, even with lots of new staff coming on board (we saw a lot of new people coming on.)

No, it was not Michael. I think it was the head of the housekeeping staff, but not sure of the man's name.

Michael gave a long speech at the Cruise Critic Meet & Greet, and handed out his business card and the cards of the other officers with him. I saw him supervising the buffet one day, and he always would make eye contact and say hello. He's a very visible manager.

The Captain was also friendly and very visible. I told the story about how he walked off the ship with my Mom and me, and pointed out some harbor seals swimming beneath the bridge. We had him all to ourselves for a few minutes, and probably could have chatted longer, as he seemed to be on a break, but we excused ourselves and continued on to see Skagway. Very likeable and friendly fellow.

I also saw the Captain walking down our hallway, which was on the same deck as the bridge. I saw him stop to pick up some trash or something on the carpet and thought that this was a person for whom no task was beneath him. Very impressive!

How very true! IMHO, all NCL crews perform at the same excellent level as the Pearl's (with the rarest of exceptions). However, much of NCL's land staff must be from another planet, where simple courtesy and basic competence are often the exception to the rule.

You reminded me of my and my sons first cruise on the Norway in 2001 also! My son was 21 and his dad/my husband of 32 years had just died and I just couldn't face doing Xmas without him so we went on a cruise. My son remarked to our steward how much he loved those mints and each night and from then on there were a lot of them left for him.

I also agree with everything else you had to say.. treat people nice and you will be rewarded. I can't stand to see people treat the crew like slaves and have been known to jump right in when I see that.

Happy sails.
