An aft-facing cabin would be okay for the Canal, BUT you do not want to stay on your balcony, wherever it is, for the entire transit. You want to see the locks from all different perspectives --forward, aft, midships, high, low. (For the Canal, I'd rather be forward-facing than aft-facing, though; I like to see where we are going! We were fortunate to have a forward-facing suite on the Jewel for our Canal transit earlier this year.)

Personally, whatever the itinerary, I would never book a cabin over a noisy public space like the Spinnaker Lounge; I think Biker has given you good advice.

Staying in your cabin/balcony for a canal transit guarantees you'll miss 3/4 of the sights. Get OUT of your cabin, wander around...front to back, side to side, different deck levels to see all there is. Cabin really doesn't matter as much as you're thinking it will!
