Spare card for room lights

If I take an old card to use for room lights, does it need the magnetic strip on the back to work, or can I use a card without the magnetic strip?

Anything will work, even cardboard.

Its just a switch. Use a fake card you get in junk mail all the time.

Fold a piece of paper and stick it in there. Anything will work, as long as it blocks the "beam" that controls the lights.

I recommend an old Victoria's Secret charge card. A fellow poster/friend swears by them. :-)

On Magic a few weeks ago, our room steward gave us a card with his info on it and we used that in the light switch. Just a paper business card.

Me too. I was referring to an old post on another thread where I told of the time when I used my old VS gift card for the safe and finally wore the strip out. Head of Housekeeping had to come and open my safe and I had to use another card the duration of the cruise. At least I got my use out of it all the way around [emoji846].

No, you don't need a card with a magnetic strip. Anything roughly the size of your S&S card will work. We tear off a section of the Fun Times and use it (I've seen the cabin steward do this).

Some people use a section of the Fun Times to fit in there!

No, currently this is only on the Vista and newer ships.

The newer ships have a power saving system where your card keeps the lights on. The idea is when you leave the room, you take your card out and the lights go out. Obviously it doesn’t work because people leave cards in it all the time.

Yes, the Magic has the new system. We just stuck a piece of paper in there, worked fine.
