Happy New Year to all!
Glad I found the site. Searched for Kicker's recent postings (figured he'd be on here!) and found the link.

Kicker, I'm very sorry to hear of your mother-in-law's passing. My maternal grandmother passed away on 12/21/06, so I know that Christmas week is kind of a hard time on my mom.

I am definitely hoping that 2013 will be a better year for everyone!

Had a nice Christmas with my parents, and my brother flew in from CA, too. Looking forward to when he'll be out here full-time. Had a quiet New Year's last night. Had some friends over, but they left by 9:00, so my parents, brother and I threw in a James Bond flick. DD has become addicted to James Bond flicks after watching Casino Royale with Daniel Craig a couple of weeks ago. Noticed Walmart had 50th anniversary packages of Bond flicks, so picked up 2 volumes for my parents (Sean Connery), two volumes for me (Roger Moore), and 1 volume for DD (Pierce Brosnan). The day after Christmas, we watched 5 Bond flicks... OMG... Definitely ready for a Bond break, but would still like to see Skyfall before it leaves the theaters...

Very glad to see that my cruise ticker is approaching 180 days. Can't wait to head to Venice at the end of June! Definitely looking forward to our big trip. Still have some serious planning to do for excursions...

Well, kay and cruzingtchr are getting our new year off to a rip roaring start in a good way....lets keep that trend a going. Hope that everyone's new years celebrations were safe and the new year finds everyone in good health.

Step mother-in-law's mother died the same day as Kickers mother-in-law so off today for a funeral....but she did live to be 93 and her health had deteriorated in the last month to where she didn't know any of her kids so it was a blessing as much as a death can be a blessing.

Kay, I take it that since you are cruising by your lonesome that John didn't or couldn't take advantage of the buyouts??? Just as well anyway if that were the case as he is too young to retire anyway......so how does that work when you are going solo??? Do you share a cabin with one of your cruising friends??? Not trying to be nosy but don't know the intricacies of cruising like most of you being somewhat of a cruise newbie and not looking like I am going to add to my cruise inventory any time soon unless DW decides that she wants to come with.

John has three more vacation days left until May 31, so he can't go on a week long cruise before then. I know many people going on Navigator, and decided to just go solo, only me in my cabin. I did chose a cabin just across the hallway to a couple of ladies we know(mother/daughter). We have also linked our reservations and will be at the same dining table for dinner. John and I have cruised with them a couple of times. I also know at least three other couples going. There is quite a large group of cc people going to a beach in Cozumel together, so I'm doing that. In Falmouth, I'll probably just walk around with the two other ladies and maybe have a drink and get back on the ship. I haven't decided yet about Grand Cayman......depends on if I can be a third wheel with others going to the beach(or I may just hop in a taxi with a lot of other cruisers and just go to my favorite beach there). I do have to pay a little more going solo(not as much as it would be for two going), but I got an interline rate, so I'm ok with it. You asked about sharing a cabin, I did that with a lady John and I met she and her husband on Allure in August. She and I left the guys home in November and did share a cabin on Jewel of the Seas. She and her husband were also back cruising on Independence with us in December. If she could get off work, she'd love to be going with me again, but she's a cpa and can't get time off until after April 17. We probably will cruise again together, since John and her husband are both "ok" with it. Some husbands are a little more controlling.... I have several widowed friends, but they have never cruised and both have some health problems. My cousin's widow has cruised with me a couple of times, but she also is having some health issues.

John will receive his buyout personalized packet in mid February and must make the decision whether or not to take it by April 1. Dates of leaving are May 31, 2013, November 30, 2013 or May 31, 2014. John is only 61, so the insurance has us more concerned than anything else. We also now have two homes with all the repairs and tax/insurance for both and the mortgage for one. It is a lot to think about, and he hasn't decided, yet.

John and I will probably go on Liberty of the Seas in March on a four night cruise to use up the rest of his vacation days.

Home, but busy with no future cruise plans right now. This is the time of year when I visit every parishioner's home and do a little prayer service, so I'm out of the house for most of the day/evening. Barb told me she looked at some good cruise prices, but the good cruise prices coincide with outrageous airfare prices from this area.

Sunshine (and others): At Pauline's Wake a couple Barb & I know told us their 17 month old granddaughter (Scarlett Sophia) had just been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Its malignant, they think they removed it all in a 9 hour operation, and they have to decide on what type of fuutre treatments. That cancer crap gets everyone, doesn't it?

That's terrible. I pray that they get all the good time that they possibly can. Hearing about more and more cases like these makes me think that something either in our food or environment is affecting our reproductive health. She's too young for it to necessarily be food related (and if it were, there should be even more cases than there are) and if it were genetic in their lineage, there would be a larger number of her relatives with it. What are these corporations poisoning us with? Carcinogenic flame retardants? Pesticide residues? Plastics and plasticizing chemicals? *sigh* I guess we'll probably all be gone before it comes to light...

On a lighter note, we're looking at cruises, too. I just can't figure out what I want to do. Mr. Sunshine's cousin is getting married in Cancun in October and I was hoping to take the 4 day cruise to Cozumel and just ferry over to the resort but the dates don't work out. So, I guess we'll either fly or not go. I just can't seem to get my cruise excitement back after losing my cruise partner although DH's biological family seems eager and willing to join us. LOL

Sunshine, check out cheapcaribbean dot com for resorts and flights included to Cancun. I have been "looking" at different options, and some of those "specials" sound pretty good. Also, there is a cruise critic poster who owns a resort in Cancun(Solymar). I don't know anything about the property or cost involved, though.

Would this be Mr. Sunshine's newly acquainted relatives?

Everyone......have a good day!!

For some reason when I look at my bookmarks on here and see the category "Cruising" I often think it says "Cursing", which I think my mind is playing tricks on me because I'm subconsciously cursing myself for not cruising....

Why did Barb have to line our sidewalk with Christmas lights and put them so close that I ate them up with my snowblower??

Been told I will soon be banned from Canada. Hmmmm...........

why would you be banned from canada???? For the most part cursing is an acceptable social activity here. We have had countless prime ministers in fact make up their own curse words. Secondly the fact that you know how to use a snowblower would in fact make you an honorary canadian and the fact that you chose to put away your christmas lights by killing them with your snowblower so that next christmas you can keep the economy's wheels a spinning by buying new ones might qualify you for the order of canada....you, my friend are way too hard on yourself. Now if for some reason you decide to jump on the toronto maple leaf bandwagon, wear a toque and eat mounds of back bacon while drinking labatt's beer you will be more canadian than 80 percent of the current population.

I really had no thoughts of booking a cruise in the near future, then got an E-Mail from an Internet TA with some interesting deals. Seriously thought of booking an Inside Promenade Room on Navigator OTS for Feb 23; price for Barb & I combined would've been $841, and airfare was quite reasonable. Hesitated, checked this AM and the price went up $400!

As it turns out I'm not sure I could go then anyways. My shots haven't been working so my remaining tumors are growing (such fun stuff), so I have to do some radiation treatments, but they don't have the dates set up yet - asap hopefully.

I asked about side effects of the radiation, they said, "You can't go to Canada". Seriously . I don't know for how long, but apparently Canada doesn't like people with radiated bodies?? I mean, what could happen? If I tried to cross the border would alarms go off?

My next choice if we cruised FEb 23 was MSC Poesia. They're doing Baseball themed cruises, and Feb 23 would have Hall of Famer Juan Marichal and some other former players, all at a very reasonable cruise price, although the airfare to FLL or Miami was outrageous.

Sorry to hear about your tumors... they didn't tell my sister about the Canada restriction. That must be something they tell New Yorkers - maybe they're just trying to keep y'all out of there? LOL

I think we've decided on a "mini-cruise" in July for Mr. Sunshine's birthday: the 5 day Carnival Fantasy out of Charleston to the Bahamas (). So far the guest lists consists of us, our kids, my parents, Chris's bio.: Mom/stepdad, brother/SO, and at least 1 aunt/husband... :-D

Kicker......too bad you and Barb didn't book that cruise, since that is THE one I'm solo on!!! There are a lot of cc people on it.

I do hope your tumors are helped with radiation treatments, and that they quickly get them set up, so you can get on with your cruising plans.

I had tried to edit my last post, but received a phone call in the middle of it, and took too long......

CG: I looked at the M&M thread for that cruise yesterday and saw they already had their first thread closed for too many posts? Boy, it tok us 2 years after our cruise to hit 5,000. They must be a super active group!

PS: Knowing you're on that cruise makes me think more about it - just hate knowing I could've saved $400, plus the docs in Rochester seem to want to move things along quickly once they finally start, so that date might be too soon to consider.

An interesting side note: Not sure if any of you remember, but Orthodox churches determine the date of Easter by a different method. The last 2 years its been the same; thiss year we have Easter on May 5! That just means that, while I normally wouldn't cruise in Feb because I'd be busy with lenten services, this year we on't start Lent until March 18. However, Chris & Tanya b-days ae March 8 & 9, so we wouldn't go that week. Feb 23 was the best date, except for the radiation.

Believe me, I know what you mean about the savings!! I had booked solo interline rate, and the RCI sales price was cheaper those few days!! I didn't want to change cabins, since I booked right across the hall from the two ladies John and I know. (We know a lot of others on the ship, too.) There are a few couples coming from Hamburg, NY.....is that close to you?? We met four of them last year on Navigator.

Cheapskate.....if you are looking for a cruise with good interline prices, Oasis 2/2 has some!! Wish now we had saved John 5 vacation days instead of 3!

Hamburg, I believe, is out near Buffalo - prob closer to Cheap than to me (we're 3 hrs from Buffalo).

If (and its a big IF) I can get a schedule from my current docs in Rochester that doesn't interfere with the Feb 23 cruising date, and if the rate stays the same, and if we can still get a decent airfare price, we'd love to cruise with you again. Hopefully I'll have a better idea by Friday.

Oh: another alternative if we don't cruise but I still have that week free would be a timeshare maybe in Va Beach, where we could visit our Chesapeake friends and look up some of our Enchantment cruisers.

NO posts for a week and then a zillion posts in one day. Makes it hard to catch up.....First when Kicker mentioned navigator and feb 23 I thought immediately of CG being on that cruise. I quite honestly looked at it as well because wife is in training in her job now and NOTS had the best prices for a western itinerary that I could find. Feb 2 airfare to new orleans was better than feb 23 (probably because of mardi gras and all) but Feb 2 didn't work for me.....plus coincidentally DW birthday is Mar 8 so it could be a birthday cruise of sorts but still can't convince her that we should go on another cruise.

Kicker sorry to hear that those damn tumours are growing again but not sure that the radiation would be why you couldn't come to Canada. I can't speak for all Canadians but we love people up here who radiate happiness, good will and a good sense of humour..(that is the kind of radiation you are talking about right??)

But seriously maybe it has more to do with health insurance than anything else as usually being a visitor from a foreign country is a licence for health care providers to rape and pillage. I know for example that my stepfather-in-law had a broken arm in florida that would have cost him a king's ransom to have fixed (1 day hospital bill was over $20,000) whereas with our socialized medicine up here it would have cost him nothing. It is either that or the glow in the dark people remind us Canadians of the failed Fox TV experiment with the glow in the dark hockey pucks. OR perhaps if you are driving they mistake you for having a radar detector in your car which is highly illegal up here.

Feb 2nd NOTS is still 80 bucks cheaper than feb 23rd and the airfare is not all that much different anymore (or at least at today's prices). Maybe I need to work on DW a little harder to take one of those cruises and even given the extra money feb 23 sounds like it would be a hoot. Was reading some of the posts on their second thread and they sound like a chatty bunch....had to admit leading a sheltered life and all when they started talking about bear cruises I thought of chicago bears....wasn't really ready for what they actually are......That could be a hoot although if they get as out of hand as some of the pride parades up here get it would be a super long 7 days.

Kicker, it sounds like this cruise would give you the opportunity to wear your multi-coloured wig again as the group looks like they are in to pink boas and possibly pink mohawks....well off to try my persuasion skills on DW to see if she would be at all interested in going on a "random" cruise to celebrate her birthday.
