What do you end up spending during your cruise

Recommended Posts

Hi CC members!

Just wondering how much you end up spending on your cruise other than alcohol, soda/water packages, casino, bingo & excursions.

Do you find it adds up?

This is our 1st cruise and we "plan" to keep purchases to a minimum, but find it could add up.

We plan to purchase cupcakes, the cupcake decorating class, maybe dine at 150 Central Park, a small internet package, and buy an Oasis of the Seas souveneir.

On port days, we each probably average the same as ChipLondon...$100-$150ish because we usually find an excursion to try. On sea days, it is more like $25, which includes the "customary tip" they add to our acct. We don't gamble, might buy one drink before dinner or wine with dinner, and don't really care for souveniers...we are low maintenance.

The things you're excluding are what most of our money is spent on! Taking away all those, we probably put $150 - $200 on our SeaPass during a 7 day cruise.

We don't do Bingo, Spa, or excursions... When ashore, we pretty much do stuff on our own for the cost of a cab or bus....We might buy the occassional can of soda, but will NEVER pay for water! The ship's water is more than fine!

We don't buy "souveniers" or the photos they're constantly taking....

Our major expenses are drinks and a bit of gambling (which is in cash...doesn't go onto our account!!!)

We end up spending thousands on bling for me :D Besides, life is short and I can't take it with me :p This time we even bought a nice Movado watch for my DH :) Our sea pass bill on this last cruise was surprisingly low (relative to what we normally spend)

I am a sucker for the pictures/albums...last time, we spend over $200 (WWAAAAYYYY too much...impulse buy:eek:) on pics alone (Carnival). I know...I'm ashamed, lol!! My hubby and I decided we will try to just pick ONE this time...wish me luck ;):D

This happens to the best of us ;) You convince yourself to fork over the seapass...all in a few minutes time...

I DO NOT need these

I DO NOT NEED THESE

I want these

I kinda NEED THESE

I GOTTA HAVE THESE :)

At least I have some neat pics to show the family:cool:

Outside of tips and excursions (which we usually book independently), our Sea Pass bill for our family of 4 is usually $100-200 total. On our last cruise, all we bought was one soda card, one photo, one gift shop souvenir, and $75 internet package for approx $200 total. On our last Mariner cruise, all we bought was one photo for $20 total.

We don't drink alcohol, gamble, use the arcade, dine in the specialty restaurants, etc.

My first cruise we spent $600 in Alaska (which included drinks, spa treatments, and tips), second cruise was like $400 for a 3 night cruise (this included an excursion, drinks, tips, and a spa treatment), on our last cruise to the southern caribbean we spent like $1000 (this included excursions at most of the islands, spa treatment, specialty resturant, tips and drinks). It can add up quick, but really we dont mind because each of our cruises have been amazing, well worth the money.

We just got off the Rhapsody, b2b Alaska-Hawaii. We had an obc on both cruises (this is a MUST for us now; booking while on board a ship even if we transfer to another cruise later; just get that obc!!).

First cruise we owed 65 cents; second we had a $14.66 credit.

This included buying some evening drinks and sodas.

We take few shore excursion. We usually use public buses or hop on/off tour buses when we go to new places. If we are on a cruise to a lot of new places then we spend more. A year ago we went to Tahiti and Australia. Our shore excursion costs for 33 nights was around $900, but most of it was private tours. For instance, in the Barrier Reef we booked online for one of the regular boat shuttles out to one of the resort islands for the day. The less we spend on ship's excursions the more we have to spend on another cruise!!

You'll be surprised how much you can spend without realizing it. Photo's, specialty coffee, and just stuff....It all adds up real quick lol but remember, your having fun.

DW and I did a B2B on Serenade in January for our 30th anniversary.. We visited 10 islands in 14 days and got off the ship at every port doing personal excursions and ship excursions. We limited souvenirs. DW had a few drinks every day. I purchased soda card 2x. DW had a spa visit each week. We had room service breeakfast almost every day in port (extra tips). We gave the pre-paid gratuities plus 25% for exceptional service.

When I totaled it up we took the avg $1000 p/p charge for D1 balcony per week plus airfare r/t plus 1 hotel night before embarkation plus a great dinner with our CC roll call group and figured it came to an additional 50% per person for each week.

Oh yeah DW stopped off at Diamonds International in St Thomas and bought herself an addional wedding band for $1000.

Let me add that we had been saving my part time job salary and did not pay a dime in money that we did not already have in hand. Not having additional debt when you get home makes for pleasant memories of your vacation.

If on the other hand if you are on a cruise where you are not visiting many islands and do not go on excursions and do not drink and do not gamble and do not buy any souvenirs you can get off cheap. Of course when you get home you may wonder why you went in the first place. To each his own.

In my view gambling, alcohol and excursions are the 3 big killers.

Being very conservative and thrifty, we have actually gone on cruises and had a zero balance at debark. Those rum runners helped:o O.K. my flame gear is on:cool:

Then again, the most we've had is around $600. Bought some stuff in the shops and booz to take home.

One couple we travel with has had upwards of $3k for their bar bill. Whew! No can do.

About $1000 for a week. It's VERY easy to go overboard (no pun intended) when all you have to do is hand over your SeaPass. The little things add up... a snack from the gift shop, drinks, pop, pictures. When I look at my reservation and see that I still owe $2000, I automatically know that I REALLY need about $3000 for the cruise to account for our onboard spending in addition to our fare. As long as I budget for it, it's not a big deal or a shocker.

It's the drinks that really get you. For example, if we were on a land based vacation for a week, we might have drinks at a bar or nice restaurant for one or two nights. We don't go out of our way to find a bar. But on a cruise, it's just kind of natural to settle down at a bar for a few each night or sip a drink by the pool. We're definitely not heavy drinkers at all, either.

I just returned from Serenade and I always allot myself a budget of $500 for the total week. This included alcohol, casino, a tour (not through RCI) on St. Lucia, tips, 1 photo (I received one free with Diamond booklet) and souvenirs. I overspent by $68. Next year, I'll probably allow myself $700 because I will be on Freedom and there are 2 b2b sea days (that's where I get into trouble;))

You posters ahead of me are dong very well compared to my family, which usually go waaayyy overboard (no pun intended) on pictures, and always get something from the gift shops on the ship. We drink a little and no gambling, but those darn pictures get us everytime in the tune of about $300-$400 per cruise-pictures alone. Now we dont spend as much in ports. But Hey ITS JUST MONEY, right???
