They will have tournaments, in US dollars, and you can charge to your OB account if you like.. Two types of tournaments:

$100 Super satellite, rebuy and add-on tourney. House cut is 25% of the fees. If total entries/rebuys/add-ons reach $2,200 (after 25% NCL cut) then first place prize is entry into NCL's annual Poker Challenge Main Event ($1,100 buyin) and the cruise for two (inside cabin). 2019 Poker Challenge is on the Getaway in December out of New Orleans. Second place is any cash above the $2,200, or if you have a large number of entries, a second cruises can be awarded if the prize pool exceeds $4,400. The cruise/main event seat can be sold/transfered one time. You have to pay for taxes and a $140 Casino At Sea fee per person, and you can upgrade to a higher level cabin if you choose.

$80 Cash tournament where the top three are paid 50-30-20%. Again 25% house cut.

Both tournaments are short stacked. Start with 2,000 in chips, blinds are 100/200. 30 minute levels for the first two, then 15 minute levels thereafter.

Since it is free I will not go down in price and will give it to a friend if the time expires. No concerns for me since it really didn't cost me anything anyway.

This has been sold.

But on a side note does anyone know the tournament schedule and structure? schedule: does it take place the same time you are in port for excursions and such? structure: blinds, anti, times?  Anyone know the past tournament schedule and structure?

Here is the info page but it's not fully updated for 2019:

https://www.ncl.com/pokerchallenge

I've gone on the last two poker challenge cruises.  Tournaments take place while at sea, so you can enjoy the ports as you choose.

They'll have the Main Event which is the $1,150 entry that comes with the cruise/entry package (used to be $1,100 btw).  They'll also have other cash tournaments (a $5,500 buyin event is new this year, in addition to the $2,750 which was added last year, and a $560 tourney) and satellites into those as well.  There are also $120, and $230 rebuy/add on tournaments.  The higher buyin events get limited players as you might expect, but the $560 is capped at 150 players.  There is usually a women's tournament as well, but I didn't see it on the schedule yet this year.

A friend sent me the list of 2019 tournaments which is shown on the satellite winner's paperwork.  The NCL link hasn't been updated for 2019 yet for some reason.  Last year they had all of the tournaments I mentioned except the $5,500, which is new this year.

Hi,

Sailing on a Mediteranien cruise.

Does anyone know if they have Poker tournaments on the NCL Star

If so how much was the buy in and was it in cash (US or EURO) or can it be charged to OB account?

I was recently on the Jade for 12 nights. Perhaps this was an odd cruise, but neither the tournament nor the live poker game had more than 3 or 4 people arrive.

Everything on board is in USD and they take cash or charge to your room.

Just an FYI - the transfer deadline has been moved up to 8/31, even though most of the paperwork says 10/1.

The smaller ships have a smaller pool of potential players, so games are hit or miss. And longer cruises generally draw an older audience which is not necessary a NL Holdem poker crowd.  And port-intense cruises (such as European cruises) where early morning tours are popular, are going to cut into the late night poker crowd.

On a Jade 7 night Western Caribbean cruise three years ago there were 4 of us regulars, so the cash game went every night except the last evening, with other players filling in here and there, but never more than 7 players at one time.  The first tournament had about 25 players, less for the subsequent tourneys. (Many cruisers only play the tournaments, never the cash game.)

Two years ago on a 7 night Dawn cruise from NYC to Canada/NE the cash game never went.  Two tournaments did go off, with the satellite to the annual poker challenge getting exactly 10 players, and a cash tourney getting 7.

My recommendation for the cash game on smaller ships (under 3,000 passengers) is to park yourself at the poker table when it opens (usually 8pm or so), get chips from the dealer, sit and wait for players.  Leave your chips there if you have to step away from the table.  If others see that a game may be starting soon, they'll check back if they don't choose to sit down and wait with you. You can let other passerbys know that you have xx number of interested players who will be checking back soon. On some ships the game doesn't get going until after the first show ends, sometimes the second, but if you want to play, especially on the first night or two, the time invested in attracting players is well spent.  Getting a game going on the first or second night is key to having it go the rest of the cruise, because I've seen it where players are interested early on, but don't return if there was no game the first or second night.

On larger ships, I've never seen an issue with getting games going since the pool of potential players is that much bigger.

For tournaments, put your name on the list with the casino host as early as you can.  Because if an interested player comes by and asks how many players are on the list, but only sees a few names, they are prone to say that they'll check back later and see if the game will go, but they often don't.  Also stay in the general tournament/sign up area starting about 30 minutes before the tournament is scheduled to start, and chat up those interested... once they see other players there, they are more likely to stay and join the tournament.

There is no extra fee if you charge tournament entries to your onboard account.  There is a 3% fee if you charge player chips for table games to your room, as well as if you charge slot money to your room account.  This fee can be waived if you reach certain levels within NCL's casino program.
