Arrecife inquiry

I'm looking for some up-to-date information on visiting the Cesar Manrique Foundation on our upcoming cruise. What we'd like to do is take a taxi from the port to the site, spend a couple of hours there, and then return to wander around the area not too far from the ship.

1. how far is the site from the cruise port?

2. are taxis readily available? We usually like to leave the ship after the crowd has gone, so perhaps mid-morning. Also, cost?

3. will there be taxis to return us to the ship, or should we negotiate with our driver to either wait or return to get us?

4. is the tour of the home and the rest of the site self-guided, or do we need to join a tour there?

5. any other helpful information?

Thank you!

Lots of taxis at cruise port or rent a car. Very easy driving around island. I just rented one and it was very simple.

Thanks!

Not inclined to rent a car, for various reasons, so would you suggest just having our taxi return to pick us up after a couple of hours?

I would just ask cab driver how much for day and tell him where you are going. I did that in Tenerife and la palma back in April and it was fine. I heard people on my ship telling cab drivers to just take them to timanfaya and wait. Make sure you have euros. Some cabs do not take credit card and some do.

Hope you haven't already cruised, as I have only just seen this thread!

You won't need a couple of hours at the Cesar Manrique foundation, in my opinion, unless you are very into modern art!!! You could negotiate with a taxi driver to wait for you, then drive on to the old capital of Teguise and have a wander around there. There is not too much to see at the port unless you are docked at the new marina there in which case there are a few shops and restaurants, and you can then walk across the road to El Charco which is a very pretty area of Arrecife.

Thanks for this info! We're still in the "gathering information" stage of planning, so this is helpful. I wasn't aware of the option of Teguise. We did want to see the Cesar Manrique houses, but weren't sure of what other sites we wanted to take in.

Do you have an idea of what the cost of the taxi might be, assuming that we'd ask the driver to wait, and carry on to Teguise, then back to the port?

Cesar Manrique's house (singular, not houses) at Tahiche is about a ten-minute drive from the port.

I agree with jefa it's worth only an hour or so - the taxi driver might wait r agree to come back for you.

If Cesar Manrique is your scene, his creation at Jameos del Agua is worth another hour or so, and a pleasant break for a beer / coffee / snack. It's about 20 minutes beyond his house but on the coast.

Mirador (viewpoint) del Rio is another of his creations - IMHO the building isn't particularly special but the view from it, on the top of the cliff over the neighbouring little islands, is quite spectacular. It's 15 minutes beyond Jameos del Agua.

Jefa mentioned Teguise - there's a super little castle there, Castillo Santa Barbara, perched on an extinct little volcano overlooking Teguise. A pirate "museum" at the castle is quite interesting, altho it's dedicated as much to films about pirates as it is to historical pirates.

It's 25 mins back toward Arricife from Mirador del Rio.

Or 10 mins from Cesar Manrique's house / 20 mins from the port.

You might want to consider some sort of combination of those sights - certainly at least Cesar Manrique's house & the castle at Teguise.

We comfortably fitted in all of those places and more with a rented car from Cicar, the best-known rental agency& very reputable. It cost us €54including full CDW insurance with nil excess plus about €12 fuel.

Their office is at the marina, just a five minute walk from the ship if you're berthed that side, Or if you're berthed the other side, they'll meet you at the pier & take you to the office - you leave the car at the pier at the end of your day.

..................................................................

The other main alternative is Timanfaya Nat Park, set in lavafields. After which, if you have a car you can drive round to the coast at El Golfo, where the lava flow entered the sea, creating even more amazing rock formations.

..................................

You can see how either of these options is best done with a rented car. Flexible, inexpensive, and driving & parking at all these places is easy.

If you choose to do more than Cesar Manrique's house (and / or Castillo Santa Barbara) but don't want to rent a car, you may be better off to book ahead with a car operator at a set price rather than negotiate at the port..

Super helpful - thank you! I have a good idea now of how to go about this interesting visit.
