Looking at Basel to Amsterdam aboard Hiln Want to stay extra 2 days at the end at Okura Hotel. Price quote from Viking seems to be 'double' what one could do on their own. Anyone sign up for this or do on own???? Thanks!!!

In two weeks we're doing it on our own (four of us for four nights, Airbnb, $1,300). We're visiting Utrecht by train one day, then buying the I amsterdam City Card for two days to just walk around and visit museums. The Card includes free bus usage and one canal ride. Got reservations for the Anne Frank House. It was all fairly easy to figure out. Amsterdam is what I call a "compression city", in that everything is close together.

We have companions who opted for the Viking thing. They just want someone to take care of everything for them. It's expensive, but worry free. To each their own.

We are currently in Amsterdam, having ended an ocean cruise 10.6 on the Viking Sky, Copenhagen to Amsterdam. We're staying at the Banks Mansion, booked on airline points, this is a fabulous hotel. IMHO there's no need to book a pre or post stay with Viking if you're comfortable traveling independently.

We booked our own air for this trip, took a taxi to the ship on arrival in Copenhagen and used Uber in Amsterdam to get to our hotel, which we will do for our return flight home from Schiphol. Husband was quoted 40€ by a taxi driver at the PTA (passenger terminal Amsterdam) to take us to the hotel and the cost using uber was 14€.

If you're comfortable traveling independently, do it on your own, if not, pay the price and use Viking. Whichever you do, enjoy your journey.

We will be in Amsterdam next year before our river cruise, that will be with Scenic instead of Viking. We will be doing three extra days in Amsterdam before the trip, which will will do under our own steam. Like the above poster, we will stay at Banks Mansion. We have stayed there before and I totally agree that it is a fabulous hotel in an excellent location.

It will always be cheaper to do it on your own, and in my opinion, more fun.

We are doing the A to B cruise next April. We are also staying at the Banks Mansion. Can you give me an idea of how long it takes to walk to the Rijks and/or Van Gogh museums and any other sites you think are nearby?

Thanks.
