Sloppy Joes

Actually Capt Tonys is the original Sloppy Joes and you can still see Hemminway's original bar stool.

If you are real luck you might catch the Capt there in person. Girls what his hands, he still has a one track mind!

Don't forget to go across the street and get your Kinos while there!

  • 3 weeks later...

Next week is Hemingway Days in Key West and Mr. Joe's is the place to be for the many Look-a-like elimination rounds. After a new winner is crowned there is the running of the (cardboard) bulls around from Greene then Duval , around and back Simonton. They block off most of Duval and put up food and gift stalls. If you see someone with a red cap withan embroidered green gecko and a big camera, say hello.

Unless this years festival is expanded, usually only the lower end of Duval is closed on the last day.

Try and get to the Schooner Wharf Bar -- terrific spot and home of Michael McLeod (we have all his CDs). Unfortunately when we were there in Jan. Michael was not playing that day. :(

Sloppy Joe's, Irish Kevin's, Hogs Breath,,, all bars known to pull in the tourists doing the Duval Crawl. Are they bad? no,, if you are in Key West for one day, you can say been there, done that.

If you go to Key West a lot you find places to hang out with a more "local" flair.

Schooner Warf Bar is one of the last pieces of the old waterfront and is great for watching the boats come and go and chat with some locals.

The reason you hear so much about the Sloppys, etc is that they are heavily advertised and easily located on or righ off the main drag. Most Local Key West residents view them with disdain.

I say go check them out, get to what you can while you there and say you did Key West YOUR WAY! There is no wrong or right place to be.

Most importantly visit it all before the big developers get ahold of Key West and replace everything with waterfront condos.

You're absolutely right. We did visit Sloppy Joe's and Hog's Breath during our first visit to Key West as well as several of the other more "touristy" bars. We still pop into Irish Kevin's every now and then if we like the sound of the music coming from there. Bear Bottom Beach Club is another place we'll stop in to get their Absolut Peppar Bloody Marys when they have them on special during the day. Every now & then we go to the Bull -- again if we like the music we hear while walking past. One of the great things about Key West is that if you don't like one bar, there's another one a few feet away. Lazy Gecko has some good frozen drinks and so does Flying Monkey. Rum Barrel on Front Street is our favorite -- mainly because we've gotten to know many of the people who work there and love to listen to "The Crew" when they are playing on the rooftop deck. Schooner Wharf Bar remains the place you can't beat for atmosphere.
