Health Insurance Requirements?

What are my options for health insurance to enter cuba? Can I buy it through the cruise line? Can I get the same coverage cheaper elsewhere? What are people paying for insurance. Majesty of the Seas is in Havana for 2 days.

There aren't any special insurance requirements for Cuba so you only need regular travel insurance.

The insurance required to enter Cuba is different and is NOT included in any travel insurance purchased.

On RCL the cost of the insurance is included in the cruise fare. Also for airlines it is included with the fare. I do not know about other cruise lines.

Your cruise line should have some information about this on their website regarding travel to Cuba. I know in the case of Norwegian, the necessary medical insurance is included in the cruise fare.

NCL covers ONLY the Cuba requirements.

Therefore you still need to cover all of the rest cruise that is NOT in Cuba. That's done with a regular travel insurance policy.

I’m sure the Cuban Government requires all tourists to have Cuban health insurance to cover them if the fall ill in Cuba.

This is covered by the cruise line as part of your ticket.

It only covers the time in Cuba. Not the rest of the cruise.

The Cuban Government does indeed require local health insurance so Royal Caribbean includes coverage as part of the cruise fare (just while in Cuba). Some airlines do as well. The coverage is through a company called Havantur.

I recently read a review that included attached copies of the Daily Compass in which Royal Caribbean explained the coverage and printed in Spanish the explanation passengers should give to the emergency medical facility if there is a medical emergency.

The $75 is ONLY for the required Visa or Travel Card, which is required by the Cuban government. The required health insurance is a separate cost but is included in the cruise fare.

For those of you who have completed your Oceania Cruise to Cuba, I hope you had a fabulous time! My question has to do with the Cuba Health Insurance that Oceania purchases for all passengers. I'm wondering if any one on the cruise suffered an illness or accident while in Cuba that required treatment, and how that worked with the Cuba Health Insurance. I'm especially thinking of medical evacuation. I'm asking because our travel insurance plan, AIG Travel Guard, cannot pay any Cuban entity for covered medical expenses and instead, we must pay up front and request reimbursement from Travel Guard. Thanks for any advice offered! We travel on the Sirena to Cuba in January 2019.

Just for the record the cost of the Cuban visa is $50 if you would like to get it directly on your own from the Cuban Consulate. The cruise lines get it for you for a charge of $75, which is probably fair, as I imagine it would take a fair amount of your time and energy to get it on your own.

And Oceania includes the cost of the Cuban health insurance in the fare for your cruise, and is required by the government for every tourist that visits the island.

My view is that the Health Insurance is totally separate from the VISA. What Documentation does the cruiseline provide that you would present if you need medical treatment?

Everyone in Cuba automatically has health insurance - it's part of the socialist system they have. When you travel there as a tourist, you are required to be a part of the socialized medical system that they have, and they require all tourists to pay a small "premium" to be part of the system. If you get sick, or are in an accident, and need medical care, you are covered. Cuban doctors enjoy a very good reputation around the world, but let's hope none of us have to meet one on our travels there.
