Weather in late August/early September

Hi, we are taking the Princess British Isles 12 day cruise leaving August 29. Having a hard time deciding what kind of clothes to bring. Any suggestions would be helpful. I am assuming layers and rainwear will be useful.

Yep, layers, including rain jackets. We had lovely weather last year in late August -- it was genuinely hot the day we were in Glasgow for the Edinburgh Tattoo -- but there were still days we appreciated having a sweater along, especially in the mornings and evenings. And we did get some rain in Dublin (for the complete Irish experience).

At that time of year we would expect temperatures in the twenties; cooler in the North of course. It can rain anytime here so bring a lightweight waterproof and something to wear in the evening if you are outside.

One thing to remember is that weather can vary year over year.

When we took a British Isles Cruise in August of 2015 the weather was more like weather in October.

In London it was cooler then normal with a lot of rain.

We missed four tender ports on a 12 day cruise because of the weather.

You just never know.

theres a reason for the old joke that a common topic among Brits is the weather

it is just so unpredictable

late August can be lovely sunshine with an Indian summer or a wet and cold wash out

keep an eye on the local weather forecast by met office day by day to have an idea what layers to take out with you

The simple but slightly annoying answer is you need to bring everything! Layers in case cool, waterproofs and shorts etc in case it is hot! You just never know - even up north can be hot sometimes when you are least expecting it! Also, you can start off with a horrible rainy day and then it clears up to a scorcher!
