What would you do?

An item of clothing of significant value disappears from your cabin on your second day of travel. You know it was onboard because the photo taken when boarding the ship shows you wearing it.

Your stateroom attendant is not interested. Guest relations say they'll have laundry and housekeeping look for it, but don't find it, tell you that their manager is looking into it before you discover that procedure has not been followed and you have to chase them again. Eventually they make an offer of OBC equivalent to a small fraction of its value.

What would you do, if anything?

Was it a jacket or sweater that could have been draped over a chair and forgotten in one of the restaurants?

Was the stateroom completely searched to make sure that it didn't somehow get tangled up with another item of clothing on a hanger? Or fallen behind the couch? Or behind the bed?

What precdure wasn't followed? Can we have the rest of the story, please?

It could easily have got caught up with the sheets when the steward was changing them. If that's not possible, then I would go to the highest person, register a complaint and ask them to investigate.

Alternatively, claim on your travel insurance.

How exactly do you know procedure has not been followed? What are you expecting to happen?

Depending on the value of the item would define what I'd do about it. Granted I personally don't cruise with anything of major value. The luggage is the most costly item we bring with us.

On our recent Eclipse Caribbean cruise we received a pair of ladies white capri pants in our laundry (not mine) but were missing a pair of my underwear. Our cabin steward took the said capris and a description of my missing underwear, she returned an hour later with the item.

I call this wonderful service for a small item being returned, this is just my experience.

Liz.

Sorry if this has happened to you....So if it did what would I do?

First thing would be literally to take my cabin apart to see if it has got stuck under, behind...anywhere. I once was getting dressed for chic night and couldn’t find the blouse I was intending to wear...I came to the conclusion I had left it at home only to find when I was packing end of cruise it was under a fleecy I had left in the suitcase.

Then I would retrace my steps around the ship...(would help if we knew what the item of clothing was). I would also ask at lost property...Not just once but on several occasions. Someone else could have picked up your item thinking it was theirs....

Then I would have a word with my room attendant and ask if it was possible it could have got mixed in with bedding...

After that I would visit guest services and express my concern and ask them to check again with laundry.

I honestly, as another poster said, do not believe a room attendant would risk their post for essentially (no matter how nice the garment is) a second hand item of clothing. As most of us limit our packing, the likelihood of us noticing an item had gone missing is high....even more reason for a room attendant not to risk stealing.

That leaves four scenarios....

The garment has been removed from your room by accident (in with bedding?).

A passing stranger saw it on your bed or a chair and took it (also unlikely).

It is still in your room.

You have left it somewhere on the ship where it is still hanging or someone has taken it from there....

So what would I do? If the garment was something like a jacket I honestly would seriously consider I may have left it somewhere and forgotten....we are all fallible. I would pop back to guest relations after a couple of days and at the end of the cruise to see if it had turned up.

If the item was something like a dress or trousers that you would only take off in your room I would assume the ‘lost in the bedding’ scenario and accept the token OBC as a ‘sorry’ from X. If the real value was significant I would put a claim in to my insurance company.

What I would not let it do is spoil my vacation or risk the character of my room attendant. As I said at the beginning, I am sorry if you experienced this, but unfortunately things do happen.

Completely agree with Chemmo. In addition, the ship's crew (room steward, room service steward) have such tiny quarters, it is hard to imagine anyone collecting used clothing as they have very little space to keep it and the clothes they wear are supplied by the line.

To the OP: Sorry if this happened to you. To answer your question: I would contact my insurance company. But, like Newbie545, we do not bring anything expensive or irreplaceable on vacation.

Cheers!

I "lost" a pair of shorts once - they ended up in the very TOP shelf of the closet, on top of the life vests!

Also look under the bed - we keep an open suitcase under there to throw dirty clothes, and sometimes things can fall out. And then go UNDER the suitcase the next time it is pulled in and out.

I also know I left a lovely shawl (back in the day) on a chair in the casino, went back immediately...it was gone. Obviously stolen by another guest (since it was never turned into lost and found).

Stuff happens.

It won't have been stolen. That was never suggested. I've left phones, laptops, wallets and a Breitling watch on the side before and never had issues with theft. Though I should have used the safe I know! But I guess this is cruise critic...

The issue lies with guest relations management and their lack of competence In this instance. The item isn't really relevant in terms of my question.

Room torn apart by us and then by the cabin steward and his supervisor.

Now resolved to my satisfaction but was interested in what seasoned celebrity cruisers would have done when struggling with guest relations.

The item which entered and never left the cabin remains lost.

I'm confused...if it wasn't stolen or misplaced and you know you brought it into the cabin, what do YOU think happened to it and what did you expect GR to do, and what did they do? (I'm guessing some sort of compensation since you are now satisfied?)

Suspect it was removed with the linen by accident. Only sensible option. If I thought for one nano second I'd have misplaced it I wouldn't have started this thread!

GR were useless. Genuinely disappointed with their management. Even their colleague who resolved things was shocked with them.

If it got removed with the linen, they don't throw the sheets away! Wouldn't whoever took it out of the washer and/or dryer say "hmmm, what's this?".

You'd have thought so, but having searched three times it wasn't found. Anyway, it's dealt with. About to start our next cruise as we're on a B2B.
