City Services in Merida

Whether you are a visitor or a resident, you are likely to benefit from several of the various services available in this city. And like any modern city anywhere, they range from high-tech to low-tech...but all are designed to make life easier! Here is a summary of a few:

WIRELESS PARKS

Mérida has joined cities worldwide offering free wireless Internet in its city parks. In fact. Mérida is one of the 7 cities in mexico, and 25 in Hispanoamerica, designated "most digital". In Mérida, the selection of parks is based on their proximity to schools, homes, and places where visitors go. Each park has a module where you can not only recharge your battery, but a telephone help line if you need technical assistance. (Note: because these parks are open to the public, access is blocked to websites with adult content and violence.) Here is a partial list of the 19 (soon 10 more will be added) parks in the program: San Juan, Calle 69 x 64 Col. Centro; Plaza Grande, Centro, Calles 60, 61, 62 and 63; Parque de las Américas, Av. Colón x 20 y 22 Col. García Ginerés; Parque Zoológico Del Centenario, Av. Itzáes x 59; and La Ermita De Santa Isabel, Calle 66 x 77 y 77 A.

NEW GARBAGE SYSTEM IN PARKS

While we are on the subject of parks, there will soon be a new way for garbage to be deposited and collected in 10 city parks. An underground space contains a large container (5 cubic meters) out of sight. Above that, on ground level, is a not-so-ordinary-looking garbage can, with a loop at the top. Solid materials like paper, plastic, and glass are deposited in this can, and it falls through the bottomless end directly into the underground container, which is emptied three times daily by city crews with a hydraulic crane. The first one was recently installed in Parque San Juan, and others will be ready by late October: Parque de la Madre, Santa Lucía, Santa Ana, Mejorada, Eulogio Rosado, Las Américas, and Colonias Madero, Bojórquez, and La Paz.

AUDIO-GUIDES

"Audioguías" is a personalized system of guided visits through a technological tool, available to foreign, national, and local visitors, who can use the service in various tour routes. It gives the opportunity to see interesting sights and places in the city and listen to more than 70 historical narratives about our culture, in 5 different languages: Spanish, Maya, English, Italian, and French. Available at Tourist Info centers at Palacio Municipal, Museo de la Ciudad, and Paseo de Montejo. Cost is 80 pesos for a four-hour rental for foreigners, 60 pesos for Mexicans.

TOURIST INFORMATION MODULES

The Ayuntamiento has 7 booths where tourist information is available (including Yucatan Today magazine): Parque Hidalgo, Parque Santa Lucía, Palacio Municipal, Paseo de Montejo, Museo de la Ciudad, the CAME bus station, and a new one at Parque San Juan. The state also has tourist info booths at Teatro Peón Contreras and Palacio de Gobierno.
