No....USCG is the authority.

Exactly. When we were on The Glory in May and a crew member went overboard from a MSC. We were just about to dock in ST Thomas. We were required to search until the USCG released us. Which was right around 2 hours before they let us go.

Of course, and I think a thread title reading: Glory Rescue Update - USCG Report Released" or whatever the CNN article is about would have been clear and attention getting. Some will skip this thread not knowing it carries more current news.

The amount of saline in the Gulf waters allow you to float much much longer than if you were in a river or a pool back home.

I'm a rock but even I can float in the Gulf.

 

Plus there are techniques you can use to help stay afloat. One of them being tie off the legs of your pants, swing them over your head like you are scooping air, pinch off the waist area and viola,, a life jacket for short periods of time.
