What happens if someone in the cabin can't make the trip?

They should be a 'no-show" since they are past the refundable stage. The cabin is paid for...the ship doesn't really care if ANY of you show up!

IMO that’s total rubbish. Of course the ship/Cruise line wants you to “turn up” that is where they make all the extra sales/profit. From selling excursions, drinks (if not included in a package), casino use, speciality restaurants, spa treatments/shop purchases (although these will be concessions)

An sold out ship with 4,000 pax that sails empty may generate £/$5,000,000 in sales but if sailing full could quite easily generate an additional £/$3,000,000 in sales

If you hand them the untruth that the other person will be checking in later they almost certainly DO delay sailing!

I have seen this happen.

Since it sounds like this particular passenger might still be able to make it then saying nothing now is okay but if it turns out they will not be sailing I stand by my comments that the line should be notified!

Nope. Check CBC.GOV

Manifest must be turned into TSA no later than 60 minutes before departure. If you’re not there 60 minutes before, you’re not getting on. They wait for no passenger.

We shall agree to disagree.

CBC? Complete Blood Count? Congressional Black Caucus? Because CBC.GOV does not seem to exist in a form I can access.

Fact: a Carnival cruise sailing fron Charleston did indeed delay sailing while waiting on a passenger who was franticly trying to get their birth certificate. The ship did eventually sail minus that passenger. That was in 2015. Now, if something has changed officially since then I stand corrected...but I would like a link I can use please

But really, why lie?

I realize this is the NCL board but I’ve been eying a few other cruise lines that offer BOGOs and hoped I could glean some info from other cruisers here that are occasionally unfaithful and cruise on other lines.

Nice to see the eye back.

FYI...on RCL when they have the BOGH (half), which I saw a few months ago- it did work for a solo cruiser, it was like getting a reduced supplement. You paid 1.5x cruise fare instead of 2 and did not need to add a second cruiser to reservation to get it.

ETA: and I just got another email from RCL about BOGH, but I am sticking with NCL because it still can't beat the drink package perk :)

Its not so much NCL making money but not selfishly eliminating the possibility for someone else to enjoy a cruise.

i look at this the same way as a dinner reservation. whether on land or at sea, if we cant make it we ALWAYS call ahead to cancel. its just the polite thing to do, and frees up that slot for someone else.

Absolutely the person cancelling, or whomever is handling their reservation, should call AHEAD to cancel their reservation! Since it is past final payment no refund will be given so you should not owe anything else but the port taxes and fees will be credited back, as those are not NCL’s but the destination’s.

Waiting until the last day or check in is NOT the way to go! For one thing each cruise is capacity controlled. That one body could potentially mean the difference between someone else wanting to book or not. Waiting until check in will also cause a headache for all involved on the ship, as far as records, steward duties, manifests, whatever...

Absolutely do NOT do this. If there are only two people in the room and one cancels, NCL has the right to keep the cancelled persons cruise fare as well as charge the first person a solo supplement. Not that they will, but they have the right to do it. I have heard instances where Carnival has done tried to do this, not sure about NCL. Better to be safe than sorry.

THIS is the possible problem.

And there *have* been reports, here on CC, of it happening.

(I sort of assumed it was a misunderstanding, but in those cases, no one ever reported back that it was resolved without extra cost.)

There was also an allegation that the travel insurance covered the extra cost... of that "third" payment for what was a 2-person cabin reservation, when one cancelled and the other went on the cruise.

It depends: If final payment dates has past you may still be entitled to a refund based on the cancellation schedule. The only time it is 100% cancelation fee is 30 days prior to sail date. I would NOT wait to simply be a no show.

How does canceling one person from a 2 person cabin free up space for someone else? It isn't like they are going to stick some stranger in there.

Although I still don't recommend advance notice if there is ANY chance of the line demanding the single extra costs, what CAN happen is that if there are enough other nearby cabins, in the same muster area, who have 3 or 4 in a cabin/suite, then the lifeboat capacity could be exceeded, even if there are empty beds or even cabins.

Okay found it. Couldn’t find the info but found the site. I did do a google search and it sounds like this is a newer regulation. I understand the need for security and I lament the need because of the insane nut-jobs in today’s world. BTW I wasn’t suggesting you were lying, I am just questioning the need to lie about a known no show. I will now mind my own business.

As long as one original person in the cabin still travels, they can take whomever they want to at no charge. There is no name change fee. I know this because my son went for free and found out about someone not being able to go less than 48 hours to sail. The other person had lost their money (and rightfully so because they didn't have insurance or even a good excuse why he wasn't going). On my last NCL cruise (last month to Greece/Italy), I had the same situation happen. A lady couldn't go two days before because her father died. NCL told me anyone else could go in her place and not pay anything. The only difference this time was the air. They couldn't afford the last minute air from Atlanta to Venice.

So, I say, take someone else with you!

No insurance. Not filing anything (I think my credit card actually has insurance we could attempt if we wanted) as 4 out of 5 are going for sure. That and it's not 100% sure she's not going, but it is looking less and less likely every day.

I did think about possibly substituting another person and would ask if anyone's done that before, but we can't think of a single person we'd want to ask to go who actually could go (still a good bit of time before sailing).

The ship has multiple capacity limits. There are a number of rooms that can be sold, resulting in a sold out cruise. But there is also the life boat capacity. They have more beds available on the ship (for up to 3 and 4 people in rooms) than life boats seats on the ship. You could book a 3 person room with 2 people, then call to add a 3rd person a few weeks before sailing and find out you are unable because the ship is at capacity due to life boat limits. If someone else on the ship has a traveler that they know isn’t coming; whether or not they cancel could be the difference between you being able to add someone who found they could come at the last minute.

I do agree that if this person is in a 2 person room the chance of them being charged a single supplement would cause me to leave it as is. But with 5 people traveling I would assume it’s a 2 and 3 person room. In the case, see if you can switch the no show to the 3 person room and there won’t be any penalty to cancel.
