Mt Vesuvius hike or Amalfi Coast/Capri - tour options?

We will be cruising in June with our almost 6-year old son. We are an active family and are really torn between doing a hike up Mt Vesuvius or touring the Amalfi Coast/Capri. I recognize we can't do both and just curious as to others' experiences. Would welcome suggestions on whether to book a private tour for either and if so, through which company.

Realistically, you cannot do both the Amalfi Coast AND Capri.

The typical Amalfi Coast is mainly a long scenic drive by car (or bus) along the coast, with periodic stops for views and short stops in beautiful towns to walk around, have lunch, etc. Not very active, but if you want to do it justice it deserves a day. You have to allow for traffic which can get crazy during the peak season (and even the shoulder season these days....)

Capri takes a good 45 minutes by ferry from Naples (you don't say where you are docking; it would be longer from Salerno). Plus you have to get around the island to do various things -- by funicular if you want to get to Capri Town, by bus to Anacapri, the chairlift up Monte Solaro, hiking above Capri Town to Villa Jovis, etc. Much more active but it deserves a full day.

Hiking Vesuvius, on the other hand, can be done in a half day and perhaps combined with a stop to visit the Roman ruins at Herculaneum (like Pompeii but smaller....)

We booked private tour with Rome in Limo and had a private tour guide for Pompeii (she was amazing with our kids and we arrived early before the tour buses), climbed Mount Vesuvius and then drove to Sorrento to make our own pizza at a local pizza shop. It was a very full and enjoyable day!
