As reported here, most choose to tip $10 per person, per day for butler and $5 pp/day for concierge.

So, $20 a day for Butler and $10 a day for concierge.

Now, this goes up if you request dinner served in Suite or ask for breakfast room service.also, if special requests of concierge, such as reservations for dinner etc this goes into the equation. In the end, do what feels right.

There is no "normal" amount like some people on here will post, that's just pretty much an urban myth that has been perpetuated many times over on this forum.

 

Tip based on how much you use those employees and how their service was. Think about how much you would tip people on places you frequent at home.

 

Remember that you are already paying extra money in your fare to have those services so tip what you think is fair.

I'm one of the ones who starts with $10 per person per day for the Butler and $5 per person per day for the Concierge and then add or deduct based on services rendered. Now, some will say that is too high and some will say it is too low, but everyone should tip what they feel comfortable tipping and not be concerned with what others choose to tip.

We will be in a haven suite for the first time. We were wondering what is the normal tip for them?

Butler: $10-$20 per person in cabin per days of cruise ($10 x 2 people x 7 day cruise)

Concierge: $5-$10 per person in cabin per days of cruise

Steward: $5-$10 per person in cabin per days of cruise (a little extra for taking care of your large cabin)

The $10 pp/ per day does not apply to our family.

We have tipped anywhere between $100 to $250 for 5 people .

We don’t do in suite dining . We have had only one “spectacular “ butler, the rest we usually do not even see. But we also do not go looking for them.

 

The concierge- we have left between zero and 200. We had a horrible , nasty concierge who had an amazing assistant . She got a tip, we did not tip the concierge himself on that trip.

It is highly individualized when considering how much of a gratuity is appropriate .

As someone recently posted on another thread, butlers usually service between 12-14 cabins (my recent Jade butler told me he & my room steward were covering 14 cabins.) So, if people are tipping what is suggested as "normal" above, then let's do the math for a 7-day cruise:

 

Butler = $140/cruise per person ($20/pp) x double occupancy = $280 per cabin x 14 cabins = $3,920 in CASH tips per week in ADDITION to salary.

 

Concierge = $70/cruise per person x double occupancy x ALL SUITES & HAVEN (let's say average 100 suites) = $14,000 CASH tips per week in ADDITION to salary.

 

Room steward = $70/cruise per person = $140 per cabin x 14 cabins = $1,960 in CASH tips per week in ADDITION to salary.

 

That is NOT happening. These are NOT the "normal" tip amounts. Please just use your own good judgement and don't pay attention to made-up guidelines.

 

PS Let me also add that the butler and concierge are NOT included in the DSC because they don't service all guests - but their SALARY is HIGHER to compensate for that. NCL is not leaving it up to the suite guests to compensate for the lack of DSC. A tip is just that. An acknowledgement of excellent service. NOT a salary.

We tip our room steward extra regardless of cabin class. Don’t you???

I do, although I would never be so bold as to suggest that everyone needs to tip what I tip.

 

Everyone's situation and budget is different, and I believe people should trust their own good judgment when deciding what to tip. For example, my cruises are comped by the casino and when cruising in the Haven or a suite I am doing so at a substantially reduced rate and so perhaps I choose to tip more than the average person. My response to "what should I tip?" is the same as when people ask "how much should I bring to gamble?" It is a personal decision based on your own means and judgment. There is NO standard and I do wish people would stop posting those ridiculous made-up guidelines that, if they were actually the "norm", would result in cruise ship concierges making $500,000 for a 9-month contract. :')

Exactly. :loudcry: I guess their regular duties are sitting behind the concierge desk. If you have any special requests, such as having them answer their phone, make a dinner or show reservation or lead disembarkation, then please tip appropriately ($20 per person/per day, including infants.)

 

Butler's regular duties consist of waking up and putting on the butler outfit. If you have any special requests such as bringing food to your room, please increase your tip appropriately. (see above guideline)

You are correct, there is no standard, but when people ask what others tip, why do you feel they can't answer the question? I do agree that folks should not say that what they tip is the recommended amount.

 

Also, just as I am not concerned with what others tip, I'm not concerned with what someone's salary is, because that is none of my business,so if he/she makes $10 or $1 million dollars that is between them and their employeer and I wouldn't reduce or add to my tip because of it.

Never said that.

 

Also, just as I am not concerned with what others tip, I'm not concerned with what someone's salary is, because that is none of my business,so if he/she makes $10 or $1 million dollars that is between them and their employeer and I wouldn't reduce or add to my tip because of it.

Agreed - Didn't use the concierge on any of the the 3 trips we were in the Haven ($50 tip for the week)

Butler - Just what he brought in during the day, No Special Requests ($150 for the Week)

Steward - $125 for the week

Waitstaff - $10 per meal (That we sat for in a dining area other than the buffet)

Bar Staff - $1 per drink

Kids Club Staff - $125 (4 kids who used it nightly for a week)

In my humble opinion $650 to $750 on top of the DSC is plenty

Well put.

 

We generally travel in non-haven suites or balconies. Tips for the room steward are generally $40-60 for the week for the 2 of us for a balcony, $60-80 for a suite. Butlers vary widely as it really depends on how much we use them, I tipped one $1,000, but it was DW's birthday cruise and she really went out of her way to make sure everything went perfect for DW. Normal for butler probably runs $100 per cruise for both of us as we don't use them much. I have only ever tipped a concierge once, but I have only ever used them once and normally never even meet them, I can make most of my own plans and arrangements, and with NCL most of those are made before even getting on the ship. We have also tipped the restaurant manager, DW has odd allergies which makes getting her meals right a chore for the dining staff, and we have found that the 2 best lines for this have been NCL (best) and Costa (good but limited as they cook everything in olive oil).

 

The best rule: Tip what you think it is worth for what the person does for you. Don't be stingy, but don't think there is a requirement to tip just because they exist.

So,,,, it sounds like when you go to a restaurant for a late meal, you say to yourself, “this waiter has got enough tips today, so I am going to stuff them”?
