Norway: Any blogs or websites about cruises to Norway/Denmark/Germany?

Recommended Posts

Taking Costa Favalosa soon and looking for blogs or websites with pictures and tips and hints from cruisers about the ship but they must be well hidden because I can’t find any! Only finding info from Cruise agencies or Costa. Have seen the reviews of the ship on Cruise critics but we thought a blog would be better than the rants and negativity in the reviews.

Thanks for your help!

If you post your itinerary, you might at least get some comments on the ports you are visiting. We did a cruise that included those countries, but I didn't have time to blog. That said, I have some notes that might help.

Thank you so much for your offer of help. We have a balcony on Deck 7.

We have the Brindiamo drink package but do not drink alcohol.

Itinerary:

Copenhagen

Hellesylt, Norway/ Geiranger

Bergen, Norway

Kristiansand, Norway

Aarhus, Denmark

Warnemunde-Rostock, Germany

Returning to Copenhagen

We will do 2 days pre-cruise in Copenhagen and 1 1/2 days post-cruise.

Any advice, suggestions, tips, hints or reviews on either the ship Favolosa, the itinerary or Copenhagen would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you all so much!

No clue about Favoloso, so I’ll just focus on the ports. We were on Celebrity Eclipse ... we seldom do tours, so all of this is DIY. And we also do a lot of foot, instead of using transportation, unless necessary.

Copenhagen: Although the ship was operating a shuttle (for a price), we opted to walk into town along the shoreline from where we were docked at Lingeliniekaj, which had the advantage of taking us by the Little Mermaid ... expect a crowd here if you intend to try and get photos/selfies. The walk is an easy one (but you won’t have to worry about that since you’ll be exploring Copenhagen pre-cruise). Some of the interesting places we saw ... Gelfion Fountain, Castellet, Amelienborg Palace (though we did not go inside), Frederiks Kirke, the colorful waterfront and canal district of Nyhavn ... lots of waterfront cafes here so this is a good place for a casual meal. Lots to see and do here.

Geiranger: We did not stop in Helleslyt, but the way I understand it, this is a drop off point with passengers picked up in Geiranger later in the day. Our ship sailed directly to Geiranger. The sail in is beautiful. Sometimes ships open the bow to passengers, which ours did. It can be cold and rainy (in fact, that applis to the entire itinerary), so go prepared on this cruise with layers and windbreaks. One of the highlights is the 7 Sisters Waterfall. Most captains will stop and do a 360 here so everyone can see it, so you might inquire about this. Ships either anchor in the fjord, or they dock at the Sea Walk ... this is a floating dock connected to land that gets extended out to the ship to allow pax to walk off. Can accommodate only one ship at a time, so not sure how that decision is made.

We rented a car from Hertz that was delivered to us in Geiranger (need to be very specific about this) and drove up to Mt Dalsnibba, the highest point. There is a bus that goes halfway up the mountain to another overlook (Flydalsjuvet) ... very popular, very crowded ... definitely need to book the bus in advance. There is a visitor center and shopping near where the sea walk/tender pier is located.

Once we returned the car, we walked to the waterfall which is visible from the ship when you first approach the town ... you don’t have to take the steps to go up, but if you do, there is a place called the Norwegian Fjord Center ... we did not go there.

Bergen: Sailed through annother beautiful fjord to get to Bergen. We docked at Jekteviksterminalen 2. There was a complimentary shuttle that took us out of the port area. From there we strolled to the fish market, where we later had lunch (there are kiosks at the market, or you can eat at one of the restaurants). Bryggen, is a short walk from there. This is a UNESCO WHS. Colorful photogenic buildings. We visited a couple of the churches ... admission charged. When we were there last year, there was a lot of construction going on in Bergen, and some of the attractions were closed, so research in advance and plan accordingly.

Warnemunde: we docked in Warnemunde and not Rostock (you will want to make sure you know where the ship is actually docking) ... it was the last time the ship would be there for the season, so there was a great send off when we left before midnight. This is a long stop because most people take tours (private or ship) to go to Berlin. We don’t like to do a 3+hour drive each way just for a few hours of sightseeing. Instead, we took the train from the station that was walking distance from where we docked and went to Schwerin to visit the palace by the same name and wander around town. Easy to do, just be aware of the train schedule and the type of ticket you have, and do not get off at the Warnemunde Werft station on the way back as you would have a longer walk back to the ship.

Hope this helps. The other ports were not on our itinerary, so I have no info to share. Hope this helps.
