Shows on Koningsdam

Recommended Posts

Can't give any specifics as to show titles or participants, but generally you can count on a show of some sort (anything from a large performance to single artists) on the Main Stage nightly. BB Kings performs most nights in the Queens Lounge. Lincoln Center Stage will also have performances most evenings opposite the duel pianos in Billboard Onboard. There may be other things going on as well, but that's the major stuff. Others will expand hopefully.

Enjoy your cruise!

Well, I guess you might have meant duelling pianos ... sorry.

Nope, they are not 'Duelling' pianos they are more like 'Dual' pianos. (So saying 'Duel Pianos was closer to the fact!

"Duel" pianos is correct because it is 2 pianos, but they don't do a "dueling" show, like Howl at the Moon.

Lincoln Center Stage was mentioned in the first response. I only saw them do an evening show once or twice on my cruise. It was on the nights Billboard took a break. Most of their performances were on sea days and late afternoons.

The main theater puts on 3 performances nightly. I say nightly, but there will be some nights with no performances at all.

Outside of the main theater, there's really only 2 options for evening entertainment.....BB King or Billboard...and it's pretty much the same thing every night. Ocean Bar has a piano, but it is very sleepy.

HAL isn't exactly known for its entertainment.

There is a show one night in the world stage where they show a BBC Earth special and accompany it with the Lincoln Center Stage musicians and the HAL house band. We have seen it a few times and it was great.

Just to be clear, it's Dueling Pianists according to HAL. Watch this promo and listen carefully to the first few seconds:

Not the first time HAL gets something incorrect in their promos. Anyone who has ever been to a "dueling pianos" bar certainly knows what they offer on HAL is nowhere near. Good and entertaining on most ships but definitely not "dueling pianos".

Although the mental image makes me chuckle. ;p

Yes, we can talk about the 3rd rate specialty entertainers - illusionist and Beatles tribute entertainer (IMO he was pretty awful) who were on board in May. The production shows were OK. The BB Kings band performers were excellent. HAL needs to step up their Mainstage entertainment.

I was surprised to find that HAL didn't change their production shows at all from one year to the next. We did back to backs on the Koningsdam two years in a row, and the shows were the same on each section (which was packaged as a 21 day cruise, not a b2b) and then repeated the following year. I know I probably shouldn't have surprised me and that staging a production is a big undertaking, but we didn't think the stage shows were all that great the first time around. I think overall HAL could definitely stand to improve their nighttime entertainment.

Just out of curiosity, even if it does get a bit quiet later at night (I read somewhere that typically after 10pm) - are there any bars open for a nightcap at least?

Don't worry, you'll be able to get a drink or two after 10:00.

Can they be worse than the xylophone player on our 14 day 2010 Maasdam cruise who's joke was something along the line.... since we're sailing from Ft Lauderdale, what part of Brooklyn are you from.

There was also a violinist and the crew show.

Crew show was the best

  • 3 months later...

Travelled 2 weeks across the Atlantic in April on the Koningsdam & have booked to travel back next month. Initially, I was concerned about what to expect in the main theater but I enjoyed most of the shows. I thought the Koningsdam band & singers were very versatile and the guest artistes were varied and talented. One was not my cup of tea but overall they gave pleasurable performances.

The B.B. Kings group was talented and seemed to get a lot of people up dancing. The duel piano players were good and attracted a good crowd most nights, as did the Lincoln Center musicians during the day & early evening. We enjoyed the single classical pianist when we stopped in for pre-dinner entertainment.

The rest of the time we attended well informed lectures, played trivia games, watched the outside movie on the Lido deck and watched first rate recent movies on our cabin TV. My wife went to the cooking demonstrations when I attended the computer classes (both of which were always full). I tried my hand in the casino where $100 lasted me about 30 minutes - I never tried again. This coming trip I intend to learn how to play Bridge.

Not part of the original question, but we thought the food choices were outstanding. Loved the MDR and Lido buffet.

All in all we had a relaxing & entertaining time.
