For anyone considering the Kahekili road around north Maui here's information about road closures due to necessary roadwork.

Kahekili Highway Road Stabilization Begins July 10

A roadway stabilization project will be conducted on the Kahekili Highway in Kahakuloa next month. The $3.7 million project will address deteriorating conditions and will take place between miles 15 and 16 of the highway along a narrow portion of road.

Public Works Director David Goode acknowledged the inconvenience, but noted the road will continue to deteriorate until it is unpassable if not addressed.

Summer was chosen as the best time to begin the project because of better weather, longer daylight and no school traffic.

Work is scheduled for July 10th through February 2018, however county officials say the project could be completed as soon as the end of this year.

Residential and tourist traffic will still be able to reach Kahakuloa from the Wailuku side of the highway, or before and after construction start/end times from the Lahaina side.

The work is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding weekends and county holidays – weather permitting.

Advisory signs warning motorists about the road closure ahead will be placed on both sides of the highway, in Kapalua on the Lahaina side of the project.

Discussions with the community about the condition of the road, necessary repairs and road closure have been ongoing since 2012, with the most recent community meeting taking place on May 11, 2017.

The work contract was awarded to Kiewit Infrastructure West Co.

Thanks for the heads-up. This may affect my cruise in November, depending on what I decide to do in Lahaina. I found an article about the highway that adds a few details to your great info above. http://www.dangerousroads.org/north-america/usa/643-kahekili-highway-usa.html

Mahalo Pam...the article you posted had great information to be considered by anyone driving this route. On Maui the term highway is loosely defined because most of them such as Kehekili Highway are at best only 2-lane roads. ;)

Family recently drove this route which unfortunately several times per year cars containing visitors or locals roll down the cliffs causing serious injury or even worse.

Sorry that we'll miss your next visit to the Valley Isle & maybe it'll happen again in the future. :)
