Take cab from pier to Alvear Palace hotel near Recoleta Cemetary. Exit cab (15 pesos or about 7 AUD). Get the "golden map" at hotel concierge desk (free) . Walk over to cemetary. Take tour if available.

Walk around Recoleta barrio and Barrio Norte streets. After a couple of hours, cab it to Plaza Serrano in Palermo ( 15 pesos). Exit cab. Walk around Palermo streets. Or cab to San Telmo barrio ( 20 pesos) to walk around that neighborhood's streets. Shop, lunch at will.

Alternatively, you can take 3 hour city tour. Try Signature or Friendly Tour Co. Or google city bus tours for BA. Or try perusing BA forum of tripadvisor.com for other tour companies. Some are free done by locals who do not charge.
