We are going own the Jewel in Jan. I called today and was told that John would be leaving the day we got on and Virginia would take over. I love John and will miss him. I'm sure Virginia will be great but have never sailed with her. We are leaving Jan. 12.

Were you told who the Hotel Director would be?

Ok, thanks mommy! I will cross my fingers that it will be the 11-10 cruise :D

If no one answered, I believe he goes to the Breakaway on 11/14/13, but that seems like the middle of the week if you have a sale date of 11/10. So maybe he will be there on the 10th. And fortunately for me, we are sailing on the 17th, following cruise! Love Adrian!

It is not unheard of for staff to join (or leave) the ship mid cruise at one of her ports of call. Hugo will be joining the Breakaway mid cruise next week while the ship is in Bermuda.

Now if someone were to join the ship on a sea day, that would be a neat trick.:D

Please report back if Hugo joins the Breakaway in Bermuda. I was told the other day that he has left NCL.

Becky, I was told by Pedro Serra, a couple of days ago, that Hugo will be joining the Breakaway on the 19th. Hugo also told me, before he left the Jewel for vacation, he would be moving to the Breakaway but was not sure of the date.

Hugo had told us that also. I hope he doesn't leave the company now. Last I heard that would be a few years down the line.

You will love Virginia! We had her on the Dawn last January. She was always visible and her phone was always ringing. She was always pleasant with every encounter (not just with us but we were present many times when she received phone calls from other passengers and she was extremely professional and genuinely sweet). Have a great trip.:D

Wow, I am surprised at almost 500 posts. We never have any interaction with a cruise director and i could not tell you the name of one in 30 cruises we have been on. I find service and facilities to almost always be excellent and the only time i introduce myself to the hotel director or bar manager is to pass on a compliment about a staff member.

Last year there was a survey with over 300 postings and it ran about 4-1 with I could care less who the CD or Captain is or was at it has no bearing on the enjoyment of my cruise! Their comments, not mine.

I'll be a monkey's uncle... Tim Kaminski is still sailing the seven seas after all these years. Low and behold he's sailing right in my backyard! I saw and hung out with him many times on the Norwegian Jewel with Jean-Pierre and some of the best acrobats at sea (Jean Ann Ryan)! Thanks for the update!

Well, I agree...the CD has almost 0 interest for me. I'd much rather know who the Executive Hosts are at the casino.

BUT the HD on the other hand, has the ability to influence almost every aspect of the cruise (which isn't mechanical-related)(or destination-related).

A good HD (like a good CEO of any company) can create and foster an environment where crew are happy to work. A happy crew makes for happier passengers. So I see a direct correlation between a good HD and a good cruise experience.

The F & B managers are good to know too... I was on a sailing where I made friends with a couple of people who were vegan. The F & B director who I'd met several times on different ships, visited our table. My new friends gently bemoaned the lack of vegan options, and the next thing we knew, the E-Chef was tableside, asking them their preferences - as he was going to prepare them something special, from scratch.

That was not expected. It was above & beyond... but it's in the nature of things a person in that capacity can accommodate.

Having had the opportunity to get to know many of these people in the past, it's also an element of feeling at home....of returning to 'family'.

I know I'm not alone in feeling this way, which is why the thread is so long. Also, in the USER CP (link at top of the page), you can change the number of posts / page... so if 500 is distressing ;) just change it! (I'm on page 13 at the moment.)

Are the singers/dancers onboard still part of the Jean Ann Ryan company?

I noticed on our most recent sailing they introduced them as the NCL Production cast. No mention of Jean Ann Ryan

JAR hasn't been contracted with NCL for several years now. The NCL Production cast wasn't as good, but it seems lately they've been getting better.

He premise of this thread is about all staff, not just the CD's. most of the conversation settles on the CD's because some passengers really enjoy interacting with them. That is no reason to "berate" them. You personally do not think the CD affects your cruise experience. So be it. But in reality they have a large influence on your cruise experience, unless of course you board the ship and never leave your cabin.

Like! :)

Some folks don't realize the CD arranges for ALL the onboard entertainment!

Actually, the CD is responsible for on board activities, entertainment is selected and scheduled by Miami. CD's job is to keep everything moving and he/she is more of an entertainer than manager. I think a lot of people get all wrapped up in the individual CD's because they can have contact with them and some think of them as friends rather than staff. We don't much care who is on our ship as the CD as long as they are invisible. Some like to hear themselves on the PA way to much.
