Parking before sailing New Orleans

We are driving in for our cruise on Carnival Dream 11/12 and my plan is to arrive around 7-8 am and take the streetcar and go down and grab some food and maybe a little shopping for a couple of people that have never been that are going to be with us. Planning on parking at the terminal but my question is are we going to be able to park that early and are we going to be able to drop luggage when we park or will we need to leave it in the car while we explore and then go back to the parking garage to get it before heading to the ship. Thanks so much for any help!!
