Man Overboard on QM2

My parents are currently on the QM2 Caribbean sailing. I received an e-mail from them yesterday saying that there was a man overboard call yesterday. I hope everything is ok and it was just a false alarm, I have not heard yet what has developed.

I also heard this from someone on board late last night. It was believed to be a suicide attempt and not an accident. I was told they would be returning to St. Thomas for a search(?) and that the ship would probably be delayed in arriving in NY.

Yes, I had another e-mail this morning also saying they believed it was a suicide. However they are now steaming for Puerto Rico for a medical evacuation.

We are onboard QM2 as we write this, Thursday June 17 about 11 AM. We have just evacuated an ill passenger from Deck 12 heloport, having steamed to about 100 miles from Puerto Rico. A completely separate incident occurred last evening, whereby a full ship search was conducted about 9 00 PM for a missing passenger. He was last spotted at 8 30 PM. PURE Scuttlebutt (from our suite's butler) has it that he left a note to his family (brother and sister in law) that he was ending his life. Again, this is pure rumor and not substantiated. We were due in NYC on Sat at 6 AM and Capt Warwick is computing how far off the schedule we should be, as we are still off Puerto Rico...stay tuned from the most interesting ship at sea....("By the way, Mrs Lincoln...how was the play?" The QM2 is fantastic....ultra first class...and the CLASS of the organization is being exhibited by the excellent care passengers are given in this emergency situation(s).)

As of yesterday afternoon, my parents said that the captain expects then to be in NYC at noon Saturday, and disembarkation to start at 1:00. Original plans called for them to be in NYC at 6:30 AM.

I'm waiting to hear if they have made up any of that time.

I was on this cruise and had heard it indeed was a suicide and that the gent left a note to his family,of which nothing was divulged what was in the note to his family.

The captain of the QM2 as far as I am concerned did an outstanding handling of this and other emergencies we had on the cruise.

This was my first time on QM2 and certainly will not be my last...there are parts of the ship I still have not explored and the ship certainly handles the ocean quite well and has great speed.

I walked down to the pier on Saturday afternoon to get a close up view of QM2 and learned why the ship was overdue.

According to a police officer on duty, a passenger aboard ship proposed to his girlfriend and when she denied him, he allegedly jumped into the sea.

The officer further mentioned that the man was hauled away by local police authorities shortly after QM2 arrived in port.

The rumors on board were plentiful. From the paging onboard I know his first name was Michael and I believe his last name was something like McCombs. I heard that he had been very sick for a long time and was with his two life long friends and left them a note. I heard that he was with his wife and left her a note. The only real facts available are posted on the US Coast Guard website-The man was onboard with his girlfriend and that he did leave her a suicide note, as of 6/20/04 they had not found him.

Here is the News Release from the US Coast Guard website:

COAST GUARD CONDUCTS SEARCH AND MEDEVAC FROM QM2

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Coast Guard Command Center in San Juan, received a report from the QUEEN MARY 2 (QM2) that a 46 years old man was missing and had possibly jumped overboard between 8:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Wednesday night after a verbal argument with his girlfriend.

QM2 departed Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday with the missing listed as checked in and received a report from his girlfriend at 8:45 p.m. that she had found a suicide note from him. He was last reported seen by a cabin steward at 8:30 p.m. and a thorough sweep of the ship was conducted by the crew with negative results.

The Coast Guard issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Borinquen to conduct a search. The QM2 was also directed to turn around and search along their original trackline. The HH-65 searched through the night and into the morning but was unable to locate the missing passenger.

Around 2:00 a.m. the QM2 was allowed to continue to her next port of call in New York City, NY. but was forced to turn around and steam back twards San Juan because of a second emergency. This one, a passenger suffering from heart problems, required a Medevac. A second Dolphin helicopter and an HU-25 Falcon jet were launched from Borinquen to airlift the patient, who was delivered to Isla Grande Airport for further transport by ambulance to San Juan Centro Medico .
