" I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by"....

I don't recall who spoke those words-it might have been the poet John Masefield or the guy behind me in Walgreens yesterday , but I remember saying them to Carol as the security officers on the Celebrity Reflection tasered me to loosen my grip on the gangway back on January 21st 2017 when I was unceremoniously booted-off at the end of my cruise.

Yes, you heard right. Nine long months since we last sailed the high seas. Oh! The humanity!

We have just returned from the Regal Princess and if ye have a mind (preferred) ye can join me in a tale that even shivers my own timbers.

I have been home in Chicago for one hour and have eaten a full bowl of Wheeties and aided by a supply of Guinness the like of which the World has never seen, am casting off on a journey down recent memory lane before I forget it all.

I hope you will join me for the next few weeks as I tell my tale in photos and video....

On board, and anxiously looking forward to this report. Will be on the sister ship, Royal, in January 2019. Looking forward to your review of the ship.

Also, just off the Crown Princess from the Oct. 4 - 15 Canada/New England cruise.

Before we go any further I would ask those with computers to hide your Bookmarks (Mac) or Favorite Places (PC) so that the big pictures I am posting are BIG as the recent CC improvements (argue amongst yourselves) where there is a wide white border on the right of your screen are compensated for.

Ok. That being settled here is the Itinerary for our cruise...

As always, we flew into our embarkation port a day early....

Newport was October 15th, not 14th but I did the titles on the flight home this afternoon and the Flight Attendant offered me a free bag of tiny pretzels and my focus was shot...

Now we know where we are going to go and when, I can get on with recounting this adventure.

Thanks to those who have already joined this "review" which of course is really a

SEAFARING GENTLEMAN'S JOURNAL

(I'll explain that and how my "stuff" works in due course)

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good...

Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood!

The Gentleman's Seafaring Journal (or Gerbil according to my spell checker) I prefer as it is written in Chronological order which means that if you are expecting pictures of the ship today you are out of luck. They will follow in time and there are a lot of them. I took 6 cameras and my camera bag weighed 13 pounds.

I write every day until the review is done. No lapses. No coming to a halt unfinished. I made a promise we will always remember-no retreat, baby, no surrender. I drop song lyrics in here and there and award magnificent prizes to those with the first correct answer which I somehow forget to mail to the lucky winners. Let's forgive and forget.

WHAT"S UP AHEAD?

I'm glad you asked!

I have a massive amount of material- 6 cameras remember? And Princess Patters

Excursions in every port

FOOD PORN-I think every meal consumed is photographed (and eaten)

SHIP PORN for the boat nerds and that includes me

HECTOR SINGS! Yes the singing headwaiter appears in a video or two

FOG PORN!

We meet Needtocruisesoon AKA Ron from California

LOBSTER PORN

Photos from all the shows we went to-Princess raises the bar

New York City in photos and video

Some Fall foliage

and I don't know what else....

Stay tuned!

Goody, goody, goody. My calendar said to look for your Regal Princess review, and I always do what my calendar says. I'm so looking forward to another Norris review. Especially since I don't have any cruises planned. (Although we did take a nice 2 week road trip last month to make up for that.) Judging from your daily itinerary photos above, it looks like you had some decent weather. I'm very interested in your thoughts on the Regal, since I know there were an number of things about that class of ship you didn't care for. But no rush. I'll savor your review as it progresses.

Jasperdo, thanks for tuning in as I get this thing underway.

Road trips are my middle name (as you know I have many of those)

Yes my thoughts on the Regal will become apparent as the days pass. I have much to say but that's nothing new.

Cheers and welcome!

Nice meeting you Norris.

I hope you weren’t offended by my “cherry” flavored Swisher cigarillo on aft of the Regal.

Hope to sail with you again soon my friend.

Looking forward to your review.

N2CSoon (Ron).

Ron, thanks for posting the pic and for joining this in it's nascent stages. It was fun indeed meeting you on Friday, at sea, and I just wish we had met earlier in the cruise as I enjoyed the banter. The Guinness you kindly bought me brought me much joy but then every glass of the Nectar of the Gods does that.

Don't be a strangler.

Um, I mean stranger.

Cheers, my brother.

Howard and Janeen, so great to see you here again as I think you have been in all my GSJs to date. Welcome. Usual cyber bar available-top shelf liquors and I don't even card people any more!

We are sailing on the Crown (our 2nd time) on January 12.

Thank you Norris for another eagerly awaited fantastic review!

I hope you enjoyed your cruise. My son is joining my husband and I on the Royal on November 30. We can't wait!

Nina! So good to see you here!

This should give you a good idea of what to expect on the Royal....

Welcome back,

Norris

Looking forward to this review. Always enjoy your writings and adventures with Carol. This is a bucket list cruise for me. Thank you!

Hi and thanks for the kind words!

The cruise was Carol's idea but I leapt at the chance even though I have always been lukewarm to the Royal Class. I loved the itinerary on paper. We'll see how it all turned out as the time passes.

We didn't book the Regal until March by which time all the aft suites were gone and as we are aft-dwellers we found our first ever balcony cabin, C743.

If we had got tickets to this year's Bayreuth Wagner festival in Germany we would not have cruised. Our names weren't picked so I called Princess and spoke to our Cruise Consultant there and booked it. Then we waited.

Eight months passed and then I looked at my phone..

24039577868_54a411cc16_b.jpg

and looked at it again

and again

24039666608_4856316b13_b.jpg

We began packing our luggage. In my case I carried the same amount of clothing that Cher might take for a run at Caesar's Palace and a bag of cameras and a bag of tripods and battery chargers.

This happened...

37891607101_a63962234d_b.jpg

The cat sitter, Chris, had been arranged and we left our Little Snowy rolling on the living room rug, turning her cuteness up to 11. "You are really going to leave THIS behind?" she meowed.

There was a taxi waiting but could we leave her? We had Platinum insurance so canceling was no problem....
