New York - time to Statue of Liberty?

So both times I went out of Tampa, I missed going under the Sunshine Bridge.

I'll be going out of NYC in September, and I do NOT want to miss the Statue of Liberty.

Does anyone recall the length of time from the boat moving till it gets to the Statue?

Thanks!

About 25-30 minutes. But, like the above poster said, I would be up there for the entire sailaway. You will not want to miss cruising alongside the SIF, the harbour cruises, or the magnificent skyline. To be honest, being that close to the skyscrapers on the water is much better than being relatively near the statue of Liberty. You wouldn't want to miss the NYC Skyline, especially if you do not live in the area and visit often! Enjoy your cruise.

are you looking for a tour or just a boat ride? If you want to go to the top, you must buy your tickets before the boat ride. If you have time the 911 Memorial is quite magnificent and humbling

We have a Havana Premium Aft Vista (or whatever it's called- the wrap around balcony big enough to throw a party on) coming out of NYC. I'd love to do sail away from our balcony (typically, we're in a hot tub at that time anyway). Will an aft view still be decent? Or would you still go up on deck to do sail away?

I'll be leaving out of the Anthem in December so not my last chance to do a sail away, but December is also going to be dark much earlier and let's face it, colder. Will likely be in a solarium hot tub for sure for that one.

Starboard side 25 minutes after sailing. I missed it before because I watched from my port side balcony cabin but I caught the beautiful backlit dawn sail back to the New York pier on return.

We had a regular aft balcony when we sailed out of NY in October and the skyline and Statue of Liberty were an awesome sight.

We have a Havana aft wrap on Horizon as well, and we've had aft wraps sailing out of NYC before. I found sailaway on the balcony to be wonderful - you do get a view of both sides of the river. Now if your cabin is on the port side, you may get better pictures of the Statue if you walk over to the starboard side - but you can get decent photos from the aft wrap.

Sailing under the Verazzano is another story - it's best experienced on a high deck, where it looks as if the funnel is going to hit the bridge and you can actually hear the bridge traffic. If that doesn't matter, you will get great photos of the bridge from your balcony after you sail under.

The Anthem sails from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey. It will not sail down the Hudson or past the Statue of Liberty. Ten minutes after you sail you'll be going under the Verrazano Bridge.

Totally forgot that. In my mind, skyline view was all I was thinking of. Forgot that they leave from different vantage points. Thanks for that lol

Since New York is our home port, we have sailed from there over 20 times. The views never get old. The port side is the best viewing as you sail down the Hudson. Once past the Freedom Tower, move over to the starboard side for great viewing of Ellis Island and then Lady Liberty. Next, go to a high deck for sailing under the VNB. Breathtaking!

Still you will have great views of lower Manhattan, even at night. You still will be able to see the Statue of Liberty lit up with the torch glowing, but just from a distance. :D

Thanks for that Kathy! I forgot when I mentioned that I had an Anthem coming up, that it leaves from Bayonne. It's my first time sailing from NY/NJ in either case, and I don't know that we'll do it again soon- so wanted to make sure we get the full experience. I think we're 6469- I believe that's the port balcony? I'll just walk over to the starboard side with the camera and zoom a bit. Should be nice views. Thanks for the tip! We'll be asleep coming back (at least I hope so at that hour) so I think I'll miss the pre-dawn view.

For Bayonne, I'll just have to remember that we need layers and warm drinks ;) Or maybe just layers and several drinks so we don't feel the cold!

It feels odd to me to even plan sail away because with FL I feel like I've done it a billion times. Like I said, we've watched sail away from a hot tub, we've been inside unpacking, we've been at the casino (and we don't really gamble lol) and one time I even slept through sail away! I do like to see if I'll ever see anyone on their flow rider in the back yard, but so far, nada.

Wow, over 20 sailings from NYC. Is the fight into Manhattan really worth not climbing onto a plane? Guess I'll find out :'):')

I had posted a q earlier on a diff thread, but since NYC is your home port you prob know: For the Horizon, we're trying to leave home around 4 AM (coming from the area where 90 and 91 join so southern western mass) so that we can skip the Springfield construction, the Hartford bottle neck, etc. If we hit little to no traffic, even with stops (thanks to DH's almond sized bladder lol), we'd prob arrive in Manhattan between 9-10. I don't care if they let us in the terminal that early- what I care about is- will they let us park? I don't want to circle Manhattan. That is NOT a calming start to a vacation for me....esp since my sailing leaves midweek  Our check in is 11:30 so as long as we can park, I have no qualms about waiting outside or in the car because we wouldn't be waiting that long.

Same question for Bayonne- if you arrive around 9-10 AM, will they at least let you park?

We always get there around 10. No problem. Same with Bayonne.

If it's 6469, it's starboard - your in business! We have 8465.

I'm with Jeff (Jamman) on the New York sailaway. This will be our tenth sailing from NYC and I never get tired of it.

Kathy and Jeff,

More NYC pier logistics- is it really not that hard of a drive coming from north (think Springfield/Hartford) to get to the pier? I was considering a park and cruise rate at a hotel to avoid Manhattan traffic, but you'd have thought I cursed out someone's granny the way everyone reacts and says "just park at the pier". Cost is cheaper to the hotel, but not by a wide margin. I've driven in a lot of places and am not a nervous driver.....but the thought of navigating Manhattan at rush hour is a bit :loudcry::loudcry::loudcry: for me. lol.

Sorry to thread hike, but I knew you two have been down this road before (hahahaha no pun intended) so I just wanted to ask 'professionals'.

I'll keep it on topic by asking this also: do you think a dslr equipped with a standard zoom lens (I believe it's 120mm or thereabouts) will work for decent photos of the statue- or do I need one with more zoom? Nikon D7000, if that matters.

We bite the bullet (yeah it's pricey - so is everything in NYC) and park at the pier. I'm not as familiar with driving down from Hartford since I'm on the other side of the Hudson, but what you want to do is end up on New York Route 9A (Henry Hudson Parkway), which will become the West Side Highway. There's an exit for the cruise terminal right off 9A. One tip we have is to arrive at the pier after the main rush - there's no need to arrive earlier than 10:30 on sailing day. The traffic can be heavy, but it's an off hour at that point.
