Adelaide excursions

Recommended Posts

We will be arriving in Adelaide in March on the Radiance of the Seas and was wondering what tours other CC members have done while in the Adelaide we are not wine people.

Thanks

We aren't either and as Adelaide is the nearest capital city to where we live (4 and a bit hours) I can give you some ideas. There is a train station just across the road from where the ship docks and you can get into the city from there.

If you want to go to the zoo or botanic gardens they are quite pretty, and the zoo has pandas.

A tram ride will take you to Glenelg which is a nice beach/touristy area.

If you can find a tour to Hahndorf that would also be good as it is a lovely place to go.

Agree. Adelaide is flat, easy to get around and perfect for independent travel.

I'd check out the Central Market and the popular Italian cafe (Luccas?) there, if you are in Adelaide when it is open.

Hi There. As a local and a past Royal Caribbean cruiser, I hope the following information will help.

Radiance of the Seas will dock at the Adelaide Cruise Ship Terminal at Outer Harbor which is about 23km from the Adelaide CBD. If not doing pre-booked shore excursions, I would expect that Royal Caribbean will arrange for bus/coach shuttle transfers to the City which will take about 40 minutes. Cruise ship shuttles normally pick up and set down in the city on King William Street next to the Rundle Mall shopping precinct.

If you want to do DIY the Outer Harbor Railway Station is directly opposite the cruise terminal. AdelaideMetro trains operate approximately every 30 minutes with a journey time of 40 minutes. Tickets can be purchased from machines on the train. Between 9am and 3pm single trip tickets cost $3.50 and $5.40 at any other time. While these tickets allow you to transfer to any other AdelaideMetro Bus, Train or Tram within 2 hours, a day trip ticket which costs $10.40 may be better as you can use it on any Bus, Tram or Train for the entire day. https://www.adelaidemetro.com.au/content/download/896/57863/file/Outer_Harbor_&_Grange_train_timetable_230214_ttable_routemap.pdf

Things to do and see in Adelaide:

Rundle Mall

Adelaide's central shopping precinct

Adelaide Central Market http://www.adelaidecentralmarket.com.au/

Definitely a worthwhile visit. The market is located between Grote and Gouger Streets with access only a 2 minute walk from Victoria Square. You can walk down King William Street to Victoria Square, otherwise catch a tram showing the destination Glenelg outside the Adelaide Railway Station/Casino or on King William Street at Rundle Mall. Trams are free within the CBD and operate approximately every 10 minutes.

Glenelg Beach

Catch the tram to Glenelg to spend some time at the Beach. Trams operate every 10 minutes with a journey time of 40 minutes. You could spend the morning at the Central Market and then in Victoria Square catch a tram to Glenelg for lunch. https://www.adelaidemetro.com.au/content/download/667/56994/file/Glenelg-Tram_ttable_routemap_26-01-16.pdf

Adelaide Zoo https://www.adelaidezoo.com.au/

Spend some time at the zoo, home to Giant Pandas Wang Wang and Fu Ni. You can either walk to the zoo by following the footpath along the River Torrens, catch a Popeye river boat or catch bus 271, 273, 98A or 98C. The 98A and 98C are free buses which do a loop of the Adelaide CBD and North Adelaide.

Popeye http://thepopeye.com.au/

Take a trip along the River Torrens on one of Adelaide's iconic popeye river boats.

Adelaide Botanic Gardens https://www.environment.sa.gov.au/botanicgardens/visit/adelaide-botanic-garden

Includes the largest single span glass house in the Southern Hemisphere and the palm house dating back to 1877. Accessible oppoite the corner of North Terrace and East Terrace.

South Australia Musuem and Art Gallery

Located on Noth Terrace.

Adelaide O-Bahn

Travel on the worlds longest guided busway where buses travel along a dedicated guided track from the City to Tea Tree Plaza Shopping Centre Interchange in the North East suburbs. Buses operate approximately every 10 minutes from Grenfell Street (outside the City Cross food court) with a journey time of about 20 minutes. Catch a C1, C2, M44 or 541 bus.

Hahndorf

If not doing a pre-booked tour, it is possible to get to Hahndorf, a german inspired town in the Adelaide Hills by bus. Catch an 864 or 864F from Grenfell Street. Buses operate approximately every 30 minutes. If doing this option, remember to allow enough time to get bak to the city to catch your transfer to the ship.
