San Diego Hotel

Has anyone stayed at the BW Bayside or the Hampton Inn Downtown San Diego,recently? Are the hotels in pretty good condition? How bad is the noise from the trolley at the Hampton Inn? If I remember right, the rooms at the BW are on the small side and the balconys were not big enough to sit on. We are looking for a moderately priced hotel that would be a block or two from the trolly. We can't use priceline as we have to be sure that the hotel will keep some luggage for us, as we plan to go down to Tijuana for 2 nights, and then return to San Diego for 2 nights , before getting on the ship. We like the Padre Trail Inn Hotel, in Old Town, but it is 4 blocks to the trolly, and this trip wanted something closer. I have checked out the HI near the pier and that is further to the trolley than the BW.
